Festivals in Armenia 2026 and 2027: Dates, What to Expect and How to Plan

People celebrating Vardavar in Yerevan, Armenia

The main festivals in Armenia run on two clocks: the church calendar, which moves with Easter, and the organisers’ calendar, which moves whenever a municipality, sponsor or venue decides. This guide gives the verified 2026 dates, what is still ahead this winter (today is 15 October 2026, so most summer and autumn events are behind us) and what to expect in 2027. We say plainly which 2027 dates are computed and which are only expected.

Which festivals in Armenia are worth planning a trip around?

Here is the year as it looked in 2026, month by month. Items marked “church” follow the Armenian Apostolic calendar; the rest are set by organisers.

  • January: Armenian Christmas on 6 January, with services on the evening of 5 January (church).
  • February: Trndez on 14 February, with bonfires lit the evening before (church).
  • March or April: Easter, 5 April in 2026 and 28 March in 2027 (church).
  • Late April: International Jazz Day events in Yerevan, listed for 30 April 2026 at the Cascade courtyard.
  • June: Yerevan Wine Days, 5-7 June 2026.
  • July: Vardavar on 12 July and the Golden Apricot Film Festival on 12-19 July 2026.
  • August: a barbecue festival in Stepanavan (1 August), Dalan Fest in Gyumri (7-9 August), a Navasard cultural and culinary festival in Sisian (10-11 August), HAY-AT Jazz in several towns (14-21 August) and the blessing of grapes on Sunday 16 August.
  • September: the Pan-Armenian Arts and Crafts Festival in Dilijan and Armenia Air Fest near Yeghvard (both 5 September), a watercolour festival in Gyumri (18-20 September) and Independence Day on 21 September.
  • October: Areni Wine Festival (3 October), a ballooning festival (listed for 6-11 October) and Yerevan Day (11-12 October).
  • November and December: we found no large festival with confirmed dates. The winter season really starts with New Year, Christmas and the ski resorts.

Most of these are one-day or weekend events, so you can build a normal itinerary around them. If you are still choosing a month, read our best time to visit Armenia guide next to this calendar.

When is Vardavar and what actually happens?

Vardavar is the Feast of the Transfiguration in the Armenian Church, and it is the day when everybody gets wet. The date is not fixed: it falls 98 days (14 weeks) after Easter, and the Armenian Church follows the Gregorian date of Easter. In 2026 that was Sunday 12 July. In 2027 Easter is on 28 March, so Vardavar falls on Sunday 4 July.

The water custom has older, pre-Christian roots linked to Astghik, the goddess of water and beauty, while the church gave the day a new meaning of purification. In practice it is a city-wide, good-natured water fight. Republic Square in Yerevan is the loudest place, while Garni and Geghard are calmer and more ritual, and the beaches of Lake Sevan are busy with swimmers.

Practical points: wear clothes you do not mind soaking, put your phone and passport in a waterproof bag or leave them at the hotel, and expect public transport to be chaotic that day. Anyone on the street can be hit, including from balconies, so do not carry anything that cannot get wet. The Garni and Geghard half-day tour is an easy way to see the quieter side with a driver and a dry change of clothes.

What is the Golden Apricot Film Festival and who is it for?

The Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival took place on 12-19 July 2026, so it overlaps with Vardavar week. Screenings were held at Yerevan cinemas, and the official programme listed international and regional competitions, an emerging-voices section and retrospectives. Some listings give conflicting edition numbers, so we do not quote one.

It suits travellers who like cinema; if you only want a few screenings, check the programme for the days you are in town and look for language and subtitle information per film. For 2027 we expect July again, but we have not seen announced dates.

Which wine festivals are there, and how do Yerevan Wine Days differ from Areni?

Yerevan Wine Days is a city street festival: in 2026 it ran on 5-7 June, was the 10th edition and filled the streets around Saryan, Tumanyan and Moskovyan. Entry is free; tastings are sold as packages, so check the current price on the organisers’ page. It is a good way to taste many Armenian producers in one evening without leaving the capital.

The Areni Wine Festival is a village festival in Vayots Dzor. On 3 October 2026 it ran from 11:00 to 20:00 with free entry, a grape-stomping ceremony, music, dance and local food; paid tasting packages and souvenir sets were sold on site. Areni is also the home of the grape variety Areni Noir and of the cave winery area. Read our Areni wine guide and the wider Armenian wine guide before you go.

Vayots Dzor has limited accommodation compared with the number of visitors on festival day, so book early or make it a day trip. The Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank day tour covers the area without driving yourself, and nobody has to drive after a tasting.

What else happens in summer and early autumn outside Yerevan?

In 2026 the regional calendar was busy. Gyumri hosted Dalan Fest on 7-9 August, a free rock festival in the city’s historic arched passageways; organisers said it could become annual, but we have no confirmed 2027 dates. The HAY-AT Jazz festival ran on 14-21 August across Yeghegnadzor, Goris, Vanadzor, Tavush and Dilijan, while in 2025 it was held in Gyumri in October. This is a good example of why you should never plan a trip around last year’s dates.

In Dilijan, the 15th Pan-Armenian Arts and Crafts Festival took place on 5 September with more than 70 stalls, master classes and regional dishes. That pairs well with a visit to the town and Lake Sevan; see our Lake Sevan and Dilijan day trip. Navasard, the ancient Armenian New Year, is marked on 11 August, and in 2026 Sisian hosted an Armenian-Iranian culture and food festival on 10-11 August.

What are the autumn highlights: Independence Day and Yerevan Day?

Armenia celebrates Independence Day on 21 September. In 2026, for the 35th anniversary, the government announced a series of concerts, including an open-air concert at Republic Square on 21 September and events in Kapan, Vanadzor and Ijevan. Expect crowds, closed streets in the centre and a holiday mood.

Yerevan Day (Erebuni-Yerevan) is held in October. In 2025 it ran on 11-12 October, and the 2026 listing shows the same dates, with concerts, fairs and a gala concert with fireworks. It is free and mostly in the centre, around Republic Square. For 2027 we expect the second weekend of October again, but check.

What can you see in winter: Christmas, Trndez and the ski season?

Armenian Christmas is on 6 January, not 25 December. Many people fast beforehand, a Christmas Eve service is held on the evening of 5 January (including at Etchmiadzin), and the day itself has a liturgy with the blessing of water. It is a family and church holiday rather than a market and gift occasion, so some places may keep shorter hours, and it is worth checking locally. Our Armenia in winter guide covers what is open.

Trndez on 14 February is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The best-known custom is the bonfire on the evening of 13 February, which a priest lights from a candle; newlyweds traditionally jump over the flames. Visit a church in Yerevan the evening before if you want to see it, and stand back from the fire.

Skiers: the season depends on snow, so we do not give dates; read the skiing in Armenia guide for Tsaghkadzor and Jermuk.

How do you plan a festival trip: accommodation, prices and a guide?

  • Book rooms first, then flights. Festival weekends mean limited rooms in small places like Areni, Dilijan or Sisian. Yerevan is easier, but prices can rise around Vardavar and Golden Apricot.
  • Check the organiser’s page 4 to 6 weeks before. Dates, venues and ticket packages change; the HAY-AT example shows how far.
  • Use a base outside the city if you want quiet. Our guide to where to stay outside Yerevan helps.
  • Go with a guide for church events. Services have etiquette: cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low, ask before photographing; see Armenian culture and etiquette.
  • Build the festival into a route. For example, Vardavar on a Sunday plus a few days on our Classic Armenia 7-day tour.

For the full step-by-step, see how to plan a trip to Armenia.

Who should skip the festivals, and what are the limits?

Skip Vardavar if you travel with expensive equipment, mobility problems or small children who dislike water; spend it at Geghard or at a quiet monastery instead. If you want quiet churches and empty viewpoints, avoid big festival weekends, since they bring crowds, noise and higher prices.

Know the limits of this calendar. We listed only events we could confirm from official or organiser sources for 2026, and we leave out festivals we could not verify, including any 2027 dates not yet announced. Dates can change, and weather can cancel outdoor programmes. For tailor-made routes around a festival, contact us.

Frequently asked questions

When is Vardavar in 2027?

Vardavar falls 98 days after Easter. Easter 2027 is on 28 March, so Vardavar is on Sunday 4 July 2027 (it was Sunday 12 July in 2026). The Armenian Church calendar lists the same date.

When is the Areni Wine Festival?

The 2026 festival took place on 3 October in Areni village, Vayots Dzor, with free entry. We expect the 2027 edition in early October as well, but the organisers have to confirm the day.

Which festivals in Armenia can I still catch in late 2026?

After mid-October the big public events are mostly church feasts and winter traditions: Armenian Christmas on 6 January 2027 (eve on 5 January) and Trndez on 14 February 2027. We found no major secular festival with confirmed dates for November and December.

Do I need to book accommodation early for Armenian festivals?

For Vardavar week, the Areni weekend and the Golden Apricot week we would book early, especially outside Yerevan where rooms are limited. Yerevan has far more rooms, but we cannot promise that prices stay flat.

Are the dates of Armenian festivals fixed?

Only church feasts and national days are fixed or computed in advance. Most festivals are set by organisers year by year, and some move: the HAY-AT Jazz festival was in October in 2025 and in August in 2026. Always check the organiser's page shortly before you book.
