This one is a northern loop by road: Yerevan, Lake Sevan, the forests of Dilijan, the Debed canyon, Gyumri and the slopes of Aragats, then back to Yerevan. It suits travellers who would rather have monasteries in beech forest and a 19th-century city built from black tuff than the Tatev and Vayots Dzor wine road. Below you get a day plan, where to sleep, distances and drive times, and what to drop if time runs short.

Question

Short answer

How long is the route?

7 days, 6 nights, mostly by road

Where do we sleep?

Yerevan, Dilijan, Debed canyon (Alaverdi, Sanahin or Haghpat), Gyumri, Yerevan x2

How much driving?

Roughly 650 to 750 km in total, about 12 to 14 hours behind the wheel (our estimate, depends on detours)

Hardest driving day?

Day 4, Debed canyon to Gyumri, about 120 to 130 km and 2 to 2.5 hours, plus stops

Best season?

Late May to June and September to mid-October; Gyumri is very cold from November to March

Without a car?

Possible between towns by marshrutka; monasteries off the main road need taxis

Sleeping costs?

Guesthouse doubles roughly 20 to 80 euros a night depending on the town (2026 estimate, check locally)

Same as the Classic tour?

No, our Classic Armenia 7-day tour is a different, south-inclusive route

Why a northern loop, and how is it different from our other plans?

Most one-week plans swing south to Khor Virap, Areni, Noravank and Tatev. That is the route in our 7 days in Armenia itinerary, and our Classic Armenia 7-day tour is also a south-inclusive version. If you have ten days, our 10-day itinerary fits both halves in.

The loop below is for people who want green hills, cooler air and fewer tour buses. It trades canyons and wine cellars for forest monasteries, two UNESCO monasteries and a city with a lot of character. We can tailor it privately on request, with a driver and your own pace.

Day 1: how do you spend the arrival day in Yerevan?

Sleep in the centre and keep day one light. Walk Republic Square, climb the Cascade for the view toward Ararat on a clear day, and eat late, the way locals do. Our Yerevan city walking tour covers the centre in a few hours if you arrive in the morning.

If you land early, you can add Garni and Geghard to the afternoon. Garni is 30 to 40 minutes from the city and Geghard 45 to 55 minutes. Otherwise save them for day 6.

The Hellenistic temple of Garni, a half-day trip from Yerevan

Day 2: how do you get from Yerevan to Dilijan via Lake Sevan?

Drive north-east on the M4 to Sevan, about 65 km and just over an hour. Sevanavank was founded in 874 and stood on an island until the lake was lowered in the Soviet period, so today it sits on a peninsula. Go before about 11 am in summer, when tour buses fill the car park. Our Lake Sevan guide covers Hayravank and the swimming season (roughly late June to early September).

From Sevanavank to Dilijan it is roughly 35 to 40 km, 30 to 45 minutes. Yerevan to Dilijan directly is about 95 km, around 1.5 hours. Lunch idea: ishkhan, the Sevan trout, though most fish on restaurant menus is farmed. In Dilijan, walk Sharambeyan Street, the restored old quarter, and sleep in a guesthouse. Details are in our Dilijan guide.

Sevanavank above Lake Sevan

Day 3: which Dilijan monasteries are worth it before heading to the Debed canyon?

Start with Haghartsin, a forest monastery from the 10th to 13th centuries, a short drive up the valley (roughly 10 km). Then Goshavank, founded in 1188 by Mkhitar Gosh, about 20 km east of Dilijan, known for a finely cut khachkar of 1291. Parz Lich, a small forest lake about 10 km away, is optional.

If you must cut something, cut Parz Lich. Leave Dilijan by about 1 pm. The drive to the Haghpat area is about 90 to 100 km, 1.5 to 2 hours. Sleep in a family guesthouse near Alaverdi, Sanahin or Haghpat, where a home dinner is common (around 10 euros per person, a guide figure, check when booking).

Haghartsin monastery in the forest near Dilijan Photo: Beko / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Day 4: what do you see at Haghpat, Sanahin and Odzun before Gyumri?

Haghpat and Sanahin share one UNESCO entry (inscribed 1996, extended in 2000). Haghpat was founded in 976 and has a bell tower from 1245. Sanahin is a tighter cluster of churches with a scriptorium and library. Both are active churches, so cover shoulders and keep voices down. Entry is free or a token amount, but check on the day.

Odzun is an early medieval basilica on the canyon rim, about 8 km from Alaverdi, and dated differently by different sources. Akhtala, about 20 km east of Alaverdi, has a fortified monastery with frescoes, but it is the first thing to drop. Our northern Armenia guide goes deeper.

The Debed canyon in Lori Photo: Lilit.amiraghyan / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Then drive to Gyumri, about 120 to 130 km, 2 to 2.5 hours. Gyumri has a 19th-century centre of black and orange tuff. Walk Vardanants Square, Aznavour Square with its statue of the singer, and the Surb Amenaprkich church (built 1858 to 1873, reopened after renovation in 2023). The Black Fortress, Sev Berd, was built by the Russian army in the 1830s. Gyumri still shows traces of the 1988 earthquake, so ask locals respectfully. Try chechil, the string cheese of Shirak, and visit the Shuka market if you arrive early.

A street in Gyumri's old town Photo: Well-read MountainMan / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

The Black Fortress, Sev Berd, on the edge of Gyumri Photo: Armenak Margarian / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Day 5: how do you get from Gyumri back to Yerevan via Aragats?

The direct drive is about 120 km, around 2 hours on the M1. The M1 passes Ashtarak, which makes a scenic detour easy. Saghmosavank and Hovhannavank stand above the Kasagh gorge, a short drive from Ashtarak, and Amberd is a fortress high on Aragats, about 1.5 hours from Yerevan. Add 3 to 4 hours for the detour including visits.

Lake Kari is at about 3,190 m, an extra hour on a rough road after Amberd. The upper road is often closed by snow until late May or June, and snow can return in October. Treat Kari as a summer extra and see our Aragats, Kari and Amberd guide.

Days 6 and 7: what do you add in the last days?

Day 6 is the flexible day: Khor Virap, about an hour from Yerevan, with the best Ararat views when the sky is clear, or Garni and Geghard if you skipped them. You can do both in one long day. Day 7 is departure or a slow morning in Yerevan.

If you want Tatev, add two days: Yerevan to Goris is about 4 hours, and Tatev is around 35 km further. Our Tatev and Wings of Tatev 2-day tour covers it.

Car, driver or public transport, and what does it cost?

With a rental car you control the day, and recent guides quote roughly 30 to 50 US dollars a day for a small car (check). Read our driving in Armenia guide before you commit: mountain roads, speed and night driving need care. A driver costs more but lets you look at the scenery.

By public transport, use marshrutkas: Yerevan to Sevan about 1 hour, Yerevan to Dilijan about 1.5 to 2 hours, Dilijan to Vanadzor, Vanadzor to Alaverdi about 1 hour, then on to Gyumri, and Gyumri to Yerevan about 2 to 2.5 hours. Fares are low but change, so check. Haghartsin, Goshavank and Amberd need taxis. See getting around Armenia.

Variants: winter and spring, photographers, and short on time

Spring and early summer: the greenest months for Dilijan and Lori; carry rain gear. Ticks are a risk on forest trails from April to July.

Autumn: October colour in Dilijan, but snow can return high on Aragats.

Winter: plan Yerevan, Sevan and Gyumri only, drive in daylight and expect cold.

Photographers: aim for early light at Sevanavank and Haghpat, and give the Debed canyon a slow morning.

Short on time: five days is Sevan, Dilijan, Haghpat and Sanahin, Gyumri and back.

Who should skip this route, and what are the limits?

If you want Tatev, wine cellars and the desert-like south, take the Classic route instead. If you dislike long drives, five hours of road on days 2 to 5 may be too much. Some village churches are locked, card payment is patchy outside Gyumri and Alaverdi, and prices, opening hours and the Kari road change, so check locally before you go. Dilijan and Gyumri can sell out on summer weekends, and guesthouses in the Debed canyon are few, so book early.

Want this northern loop planned with a driver and rooms booked by people who know the roads?
