There is no central booking system, and most riding happens at small stables, guesthouses and resorts that take groups of two to a dozen riders out on mountain tracks, forest paths and canyon edges. This guide covers the regions where we could confirm a working offer in October 2026, what rides roughly cost, and the limits you should know about before you pay.

If you know riding schools in the UK or ranch rides in the US, expect something simpler: a guide, local horses, a route that follows the landscape, and a website that sometimes leaves out the price or the weight limit. In the north-east, Yenokavan and the Dilijan forests in Tavush. In the north-west, the Dzoraget canyon in Lori. In the south, Vayots Dzor near Noravank and Urtsadzor. And around Yerevan, where riding clubs give lessons rather than trail rides.

Other mountain areas, such as the slopes of Aragats, Lake Sevan, Tsaghkadzor and Syunik, are obviously horse country. But we could not find an operator with a current, checkable offer there, so we name none. Apaga Resort in Yenokavan village lists horse riding on its own website, and one booking listing for it describes a 7 to 8 hour day with lunch, a guide and hotel transfer. Yell Extreme Park, also in Yenokavan, runs horse tours that range from 20 minutes to 7 days, according to Armenia Discovery. We could not find prices or rules for either, so contact them directly.

ArmGeo (Armenian Geographic) offers a day from Yerevan that starts at Haghartsin Monastery, then continues by off-road vehicle to the riding area for a 10 km round trip, ending with a walk through old Dilijan. It lists a 100 kg rider limit, groups of 2 to 9 and April to November. For the area itself, see our guide to Dilijan and Tavush, or take the Lake Sevan and Dilijan day trip if you would rather not ride.

The forests around Dilijan, seen from above

What about Lori, Vayots Dzor and around Yerevan?

Lori. A full-day private ride across the Dzoraget canyon meets at an equestrian centre south of Aygehat village, off the Odzun to Stepanavan road. The listing includes a guide, a picnic lunch and a helmet, and starts at US$52.89 per person. It calls the descent into the valley moderately challenging. Avan Dzoraget Hotel offers three trails of up to 3 hours, for groups of 2 to 12, with a 90 kg limit and an April to November season.

Vayots Dzor. SunChild Eco Tours lists two 4 to 5 hour loops from Tigranashen (20 to 25 km), at 40,000 AMD per person per day with a maximum of four riders. It also lists Urtsadzor rides from 2 to 7 hours. ArmGeo runs a 10 km ride from the village of Gomk after a stop at Noravank. Both fit naturally with our Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank tour.

Around Yerevan. The Hovik Hayrapetyan Equestrian Centre in southern Yerevan opened in 2001, offers lessons for adults and children, has a 1,800 m hippodrome and hosts competitions of the Federation of Equestrian Sport of Armenia. Armenia Discovery also lists Ayrudzi in Ashtarak and Mirage in Norabats. These are riding clubs, so expect arena work, not scenery.

Vayots Dzor, a landscape that suits slow rides

How long are the rides, and what do they cost?

Four formats exist: short rides of 20 minutes to 2 hours, half days of 3 to 5 hours, full days with lunch, and multi-day treks (we saw a 7-day Dzoraget listing and 7-day Yenokavan options). Prices we found in October 2026:

SunChild Eco Tours: 40,000 AMD per person per day, Vayots Dzor loops.

ArmGeo: 165,000 to 360,000 AMD per group of 2 to 9 for the Dilijan day, which works out at roughly 40,000 to 80,000 AMD per person, transport and guide included.

Dzoraget full day: from US$52.89 per person on a booking platform.

Treat all of this as a guide. The scope differs: some include transport from Yerevan, lunch and a guide, others only the horse and a handler. Confirm what is included and the current price.

Do you need experience, and what should you wear?

Most offers say they suit beginners and experienced riders, and group sizes are small (often 2 to 4 on the loops we read). Expect to sit in the saddle for hours, on slopes and stony ground. Wear long trousers, closed shoes or boots with a small heel, and layers: mountain weather changes fast. ArmGeo’s gear list adds a fleece, hat, gloves, rain jacket, sun cream and a small first-aid kit. If your trip also includes walking, our hiking guide covers seasons and routes.

Is horse riding in Armenia safe?

Riding carries real risk anywhere. Before booking, ask whether a helmet is provided (the Dzoraget listing says so, others do not state it), how many guides go with the group, whether the horse is matched to your size and experience, and what the plan is if someone falls, since mountain trails can be far from a clinic. Check your insurance wording first, and read our health and insurance tips. We found no age rules on the pages we read, so ask about children, and expect operators to say no if a child is too small for the saddle or the route.

How do you spot a well-run stable?

Horses look fit, with clean hooves and no sore backs, and they are not worked all day in heat.

Group size is sensible: the listings we read cap groups at 2 to 12.

The guide asks about your experience and adjusts stirrups and saddle before you leave.

The weight limit is stated, and the operator enforces it.

You get a clear answer on helmet, price, duration and cancellation.

Walk away if the horses are tied in the sun, the answer to every question is “no problem”, or the route is a fast gallop for tourists.

Who should skip horse riding in Armenia?

Two listings we read say the ride is not recommended for people with back problems, pregnant travellers or anyone with a serious medical condition. Riders above the stated weight limits (90 or 100 kg where published) should also skip it or ask for another option. Riding is also a poor choice if you are nervous around large animals, or want jumping or dressage, which means a club in Yerevan. The rides are not wheelchair accessible. If you want the landscape without the saddle, walking or a car tour does the job, and our guided tour or DIY comparison helps you choose.

What do we know about Armenian horses in history?

Armenia has a long record with horses. In the Anabasis, Xenophon describes a village in the Armenian highlands, around 400 BC, where colts were being reared as tribute for the Persian king, and he notes that the local horses were smaller than Persian ones but more spirited. Strabo, writing centuries later, calls Armenia an exceptionally good horse-pasturing country and says the satrap of Armenia sent the Persian king 20,000 foals every year for the festival of Mithras. These texts speak of the wider ancient region, not the modern republic.

Horses grazing near an Armenian village Photo: Բոյաջյան Մ / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

We left out claims about modern breeds and village festivals because we could not verify them well enough.

Can Solotravel arrange a ride?

Riding is not a bookable product of ours.
