In one week you can ski on Mount Teghenis, soak in mineral water in Jermuk, see Mount Ararat from Yerevan on a clear morning and eat khash on a frosty Saturday. Our broader overview, Armenia in winter, explains what the season feels like. This guide is the planning layer: activities, dates, roads, limits and a five-day plan. All details are as we understand them for winter 2026/27, and we say where you should check locally.

Question

Short answer

When is the winter season?

December to March; reliable snow in the mountains from late December

How cold is it?

Yerevan usually around -5 to +5 °C by day, mountains often -10 °C or colder

Where do you ski?

Tsaghkadzor (about 30 km of pistes), small area at Jermuk

Thermal baths?

Jermuk spa hotels and sanatoria, mineral springs in the town centre

Main winter dates

Yerevan lights from December, New Year, Christmas 6 January, Trndez 14 February

Driving

Main roads cleared; mountain passes and Syunik roads can close, winter tyres essential

Daylight

About nine hours in late December, sunset around 17:30

Best for

Skiers, spa lovers, culture and food travellers who accept short days

What can you actually do in Armenia in winter?

Five things work well: skiing and snow walks, thermal spas, snow-covered monasteries without crowds, Yerevan’s December events and long Armenian meals. What works less well is anything that depends on warm weather, such as lakeside lunches at Sevan, long hikes above 2,000 m or the high mountain passes.

Think of Armenia in winter as a compact trip. Distances are short, so you can base yourself in Yerevan and make day trips, then add one night in the mountains for snow or spa time.

Khor Virap under snow, with the Ararat plain behind

How cold does it get, and what should you plan around?

Yerevan sits at roughly 1,000 m. In January expect daytime temperatures from about -5 to +5 °C, often with sun, and colder nights. Mountain towns such as Tsaghkadzor, Jermuk and Gyumri are colder, and temperatures of -10 to -15 °C are normal there during cold spells.

The real limit is daylight. In late December it is light for about nine hours, so plan one main stop per half day and finish driving before dark. Our month-by-month guide shows how quickly this improves in February and March, and the packing list covers layers, grippy boots and sunglasses.

Where can you ski and snowboard?

Tsaghkadzor is the main resort, about an hour from Yerevan. Its slopes run from roughly 1,966 m to 2,819 m, with around 30 km of pistes and seven lifts, mostly easy and intermediate. Opening hours are usually about 09:30 to 17:30, and one resort listing gives an adult day pass of roughly 13,000 AMD (around 30 euros) in the main season. The season is advertised from early December, but conditions vary, so check the lift status for the day. We keep the detail, including rental and beginner advice, in our skiing in Armenia guide.

If you do not ski, the same mountain still works. The Tsaghkadzor ropeway climbs towards the summit, there is Kecharis monastery in the birch forest below, and operators in town offer snowmobiling and sledging. Check ropeway hours locally, because they change with wind and holidays.

Tsaghkadzor in winter: the town sits below Mount Teghenis Photo: Narek75 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Is Jermuk worth visiting for thermal baths in winter?

Yes, if you want a slow trip. Jermuk is a spa town in Vayots Dzor, with mineral springs at the Gallery of Water in the centre. Tourism pages list the spigots at about 30 to 57 °C, and you can taste them with a cup. Spa hotels and sanatoria offer mineral baths and massages, and the waterfall partly freezes while water keeps flowing beneath the ice.

There is also a small ski area, about 3 km of pistes with one lift, at roughly 2,100 to 2,438 m. The ropeway has been reported as under renovation, so do not build your trip around it. Roads to Jermuk and the passes on the way need a weather check, and our Jermuk and Vayots Dzor guide covers the route.

Jermuk waterfall, which partly freezes in cold weather Photo: Ավետիսյան91 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

What happens in Yerevan from December to February?

Yerevan changes in December. The main New Year tree and the Christmas fair are normally on and around Republic Square, with lights on Northern Avenue and other central streets. Exact dates and locations change every year. Past years had the tree lit anywhere from 8 to 21 December, and some markets ran until about 13 January, so check the city’s announcements before booking around a specific evening.

Then come the church dates. The Armenian Church celebrates Christmas and Theophany together on 6 January. On the evening of 5 January there is a candlelit liturgy, and on 6 January the liturgy is followed by the blessing of the water. The feast is preceded by a week of fasting, and the traditional meal afterwards includes rice with fish and dried fruit. Visitors are welcome in churches if they dress modestly and stay quiet, as we explain in our etiquette guide.

On 13 and 14 February comes Trndez, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Bonfires are lit in the evening of the 13th, and newlyweds traditionally leap over the flames. Gatherings are held at churches, including Saint Anna in Yerevan.

Yerevan's Republic Square at New Year with lights and the Christmas fair Photo: 23artashes / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

What should you eat and drink when it is cold?

Winter is when Armenian food makes the most sense. Khash, a slow-cooked beef-foot broth, is eaten early on cold mornings, usually at weekends, with garlic, lavash, radish and herbs. Traditionally it is a cold-season dish, so ask a day ahead whether a restaurant is making it. Ghapama, a pumpkin stuffed with rice and dried fruit, appears on festive tables, and gata, the sweet bread, is part of the New Year season.

Add hot tea with apricot or herbs, and mulled wine at the markets. Our Armenian food guide explains how to order the classics.

Can you drive in winter, and what closes?

Main roads around Yerevan, Sevan and towards Gyumri are generally cleared, but conditions change quickly. The Rescue Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs regularly lists roads that are closed or hard to pass. In February 2025 that list included Sisian to Goris, Goris to Tatev and the road to Amberd, while the Vardenyats pass was shut to trucks. Black ice and fog were also reported on several provincial roads.

Tyres matter. The Rescue Service said in December 2024 that winter tyres are mandatory until 31 March, while other guides call the rule situational. Either way, ask for proper winter tyres or hire a driver, and carry chains if you head for a high pass. Our driving guide covers licences and rentals.

Some sights depend on weather. Wings of Tatev usually runs Tuesday to Sunday on shorter winter hours, but strong wind or maintenance can stop it, so check the day before. Amberd is usually closed from December until late spring because the access road is not cleared. Many small guesthouses in Dilijan and Syunik close for the season.

Which day trips work best in snow?

Garni and Geghard: the rock-cut monastery has good acoustics and candles, and a snowy gorge is striking. See our half-day tour.

Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank: Ararat is often clearer in cold air, and the Areni wine stop gives you a warm break. Our day tour combines them, subject to road conditions.

Sevan and Dilijan: frosty forest walks, the shore at Sevanavank and Haghartsin. Snowshoes are reportedly rented at the Dilijan information centre when there is enough snow. See the day trip.

Gyumri: about two hours from Yerevan, with black and red tuff buildings in the Kumayri district, Vardanants Square and the Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life.

Dilijan and its forested hills in winter

What does a five-day winter plan look like?

Day 1, Yerevan: Republic Square, the Cascade for views towards Ararat if the sky is clear, a long dinner. A walking tour works in daylight.

Day 2, Garni and Geghard: morning trip, then an afternoon of museums or cafes in town.

Day 3, Tsaghkadzor: ski, or ride the ropeway and walk to Kecharis, and return to Yerevan.

Day 4, Khor Virap, Areni, Noravank: a full day, with lunch at a winery restaurant.

Day 5, flexible: Etchmiadzin, Gyumri, or Jermuk if you can add a night.

For a longer trip in good weather, our 7-day classic tour shows the standard route, and we can adapt it for winter.

Who should skip winter, and what are the limits?

Skip winter if you want long hikes, lake swimming or Tatev with guaranteed cable-car rides. Mountain roads can force plan changes at short notice, and some guesthouses close. Hotels are usually cheaper than in summer, but not around New Year, when restaurants may close or raise prices on 31 December and 1 January. Book early for that week.

Winter suits you if you accept short days, prefer empty monasteries and like a flexible plan.
