Museum Night in mid-May is free for everyone, two Yerevan institutions charge nothing all year, and the well-known “last Saturday of the month” offer is, on the official pages we read, for citizens of Armenia only. Visitors from London or Washington are used to free national museums. In Armenia you will pay, but the sums are small, usually 1,000 to 2,500 AMD per adult.

We checked the museums’ own websites in October 2026 and left out anything we could not confirm. Policies change, so treat this as a planning guide and confirm on the day.

Question

Short answer

Is there a free day for tourists?

Museum Night in mid-May: 16 May 2026, free in participating museums from 11:00 to midnight

Free last Saturday of the month?

Listed for citizens of Armenia with ID. It is held around International Museum Day (18 May), and in 2026 it fell on a Saturday. In 2026 the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports announced it for Saturday 16 May, with participating museums open free of charge from 11:00 until midnight. The announcements we read did not give a full list, but venues named for the programme included the History Museum of Armenia, the National Gallery of Armenia, the Charents Museum of Literature and Arts, the Komitas Museum-Institute and several house-museums.

In earlier years the ministry also made museums free on 18 May itself. We cannot promise the exact date or format for 2027, so check in the first half of May. If your trip can be shifted by a week, this is the single best day for museum-hopping, though the popular ones get crowded in the evening.

The Matenadaran in Yerevan, home of the manuscript collection Photo: Vyacheslav Argenberg / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0

What about the last Saturday of the month?

Several state museums list free entry on the last Saturday of each month. The Matenadaran, the History Museum of Armenia, the Sergei Parajanov Museum and the Charents Museum all say it is for citizens of Armenia, and the Matenadaran adds “with an identity document”. A notice about the national museum-reserves (Garni, Zvartnots, Amberd and others) uses the same wording.

So a tourist should not plan around it. If you arrive on that Saturday, the sign may be useful for a friend who holds Armenian citizenship, but you will pay at the desk. Guided tours are not free on these days either.

Which museums in Yerevan are free all year?

Two, as far as we could verify.

Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute at Tsitsernakaberd. The museum’s website says admission is free and donations are welcome. It lists Tuesday to Saturday hours (10:00 to 17:00 from mid-February to mid-November, shorter in winter), Sunday 11:00 to 15:00, and closed on Mondays and on a list of holidays. Guided tours in several languages exist but are paid (from 7,000 AMD for 1 to 10 visitors in a language other than Armenian) and booked by phone up to 60 days ahead. Tours are not offered to children under 13.

Cafesjian Center for the Arts at the Cascade. This is a foundation-run museum, not a state one. Its website states free admission, with the exhibition galleries open Friday to Sunday 10:00 to 20:00 and the escalator gallery daily 8:00 to 20:00. Confirm the current exhibition and hours before you climb up.

Tsitsernakaberd, the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan Photo: Preacher lad / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

What do the main Yerevan museums cost in 2026?

These are the adult prices listed on the museums’ sites when we checked. Prices for citizens and residents are often lower, so you may see two numbers on the page.

Matenadaran: 2,000 AMD adults, 1,000 AMD ages 6 to 18, children under 6 free. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:50.

History Museum of Armenia (Republic Square): 2,500 AMD for the permanent exhibition; a temporary exhibition with loans from Berlin’s Museum Island was listed at 4,000 AMD. Open Tuesday to Saturday 11:00 to 18:00, Sunday 11:00 to 17:00, closed Monday.

Erebuni Museum: a travel-guide listing gives 1,000 AMD for adults and 300 AMD for students, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00. Treat this as a second-hand figure.

Sergei Parajanov Museum: the ticket page lists 1,500 AMD for adults, with separate resident and non-resident rates that we could not read clearly. Audio guides are offered in several languages.

Charents Museum of Literature and Arts: 1,500 AMD adults, 750 AMD students and pupils.

Two paid museums such as the Matenadaran and the History Museum come to about 4,500 AMD per adult without guides. Add the Genocide Museum and Cafesjian Center and you have a full museum day for the price of a modest lunch. Our guide to Tsitsernakaberd, the Matenadaran and other Yerevan museums explains what to see inside each.

Who gets free or cheaper entry?

Each museum keeps its own list, but the pattern is similar. Free entry is typically given to:

children under 6 (Matenadaran) or under 12 (History Museum, Charents Museum);

ICOM members, which matters if you work in a museum abroad: bring your card;

museum staff, conscripts and servicemen, and some groups with documents, such as war veterans or large-family children over 12;

journalists on working days at the History Museum, with proof of status.

Discounts for students, pupils and pensioners are mostly written for citizens of Armenia. A foreign student card may or may not be accepted, so ask politely rather than assume. At the Mother See of Echmiadzin the pensioners’ and soldiers’ free entry is listed in the same way.

What do guides and cameras cost extra?

Guides are where costs add up. Listed foreign-language rates: Matenadaran 5,000 AMD for up to 10 visitors (7,000 AMD for 11 or more), History Museum 5,000 AMD, Parajanov Museum 5,000 AMD, Charents Museum 3,000 AMD for Russian or English. Guides are paid even on free-entry days, and usually need a reservation.

For photos, the Matenadaran page we read lists no fee for ordinary visitors but requires the director’s permission for professional filming. We found no photo charges on the History Museum page. Some museums charge per item for professional copies, so ask before you set up a tripod.

Are museums outside Yerevan free or cheap?

Mostly cheap rather than free, and published prices are harder to find. City by city:

Echmiadzin: the Mother See’s page lists the Ruben Sevak Museum at 500 AMD and the Treasury House at 2,000 AMD for foreign visitors (1,000 AMD for Armenian adults), Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 to 17:30. Free for preschool children and some other groups. Check before you go, as church schedules shift.

Gyumri: the Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life is listed at 1,000 AMD, Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 (second-hand listing). The Gallery of the Aslamazyan Sisters is at 242 Abovyan Street; we found no verified price, so call ahead.

Dilijan: the local lore museum and art gallery occupies three floors in the town centre, and the Sharambeyan house is a small folk art museum. We could not verify prices or hours for either.

Sisian and Zangezur: the Sisian History Museum, named after the historian Nikoghayos Adontc, is in the town. We found no price information, so ask locally.

A street in central Gyumri Photo: Well-read MountainMan / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

For a northern route, read our guide to Gyumri, Lori, Haghpat and Sanahin. If you prefer a guide, our Yerevan city walking tour passes several of the central museums.

Who should skip the free-day plan, and what are the limits?

Skip it if you are a foreign visitor counting on the last Saturday: it is listed for citizens. Skip it if you have only Monday in Yerevan, because most state museums are closed. Do not build an itinerary around Museum Night unless you will be in Armenia in mid-May, and expect queues at the best-known museums in the evening.

Also remember that prices here come from museum pages and a few listings, checked in October 2026, and some museums publish different figures in Armenian and English. We found no official pass for several museums. If something matters to your plan, such as a child’s free entry, ask the museum by phone or message before you travel.

Want museums, monasteries and landscapes in one well-timed trip?
