Public transport works via Goris, but it takes planning. Our honest advice as a local team: do not try to cram it into one day if you can spare a night.

Question

Short answer

Distance and time from Yerevan?

About 270 km, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours one way by car.

Easiest way?

Guided or private tour, or a driver you book for the day or two days.

Cheapest way?

Marshrutka or shared taxi to Goris, then a local taxi, in 2026 often a few thousand AMD per leg (check locally).

Own car?

Yes, a normal car is fine on the main road via Areni and Sisian; the last stretch is winding.

Wings of Tatev cable car?

About 5.7 km, around 12 minutes each way, from Halidzor to the monastery; return ticket roughly 7,000 to 9,000 AMD in recent listings.

Day trip or overnight?

Day trip is possible by car but long; overnight in Tatev or Goris is much more comfortable.

Best months?

May to October; the road can be icy in winter and the ropeway pauses in strong wind.

How far is Tatev from Yerevan, and what is the route?

Tatev monastery is in the Syunik province in the south, close to the Iranian border region. The usual road leaves Yerevan on the Ararat plain, passes the turn for Khor Virap, continues through the Areni and Vayk area, climbs over the Vorotan pass, and then runs via Sisian to Goris. From Goris you drive on to Halidzor and the Tatev road. Distances in guides range from about 250 to 280 km depending on the start point, so treat “roughly 270 km” as a planning figure.

The road is paved and generally good, but the mountain sections are slow behind lorries, and in winter the Vorotan pass can have snow or ice. Our guide to driving in Armenia and car rental covers road rules, fuel and parking, and our overview of getting around Armenia shows how the marshrutka network fits together.

Tatev monastery in Syunik province, southern Armenia

Option 1: Which is the easiest way, a tour or a private driver?

For most travellers, particularly solo ones without a car, a tour is the simplest answer. Typical formats are a long one-day tour from Yerevan (12 to 14 hours, often with a stop at Khor Virap, Noravank or a winery on the way), a private driver for the same route, or a two-day version with a night in Tatev or Goris. Prices vary a lot with group size, so ask what is included: transport, ropeway ticket, lunch, entrance fees.

A one-day tour is workable if you do not mind a very early start and a late return. A two-day trip is better: you reach the monastery with time to walk around, you can ride the cable car without watching the clock, and you can add Karahunj or Shaki on day two (see below).

Option 2: Can you take a taxi or hire a driver from Yerevan to Tatev?

Yes. A direct taxi or private driver is the most flexible choice for two to four people sharing the cost. Quoted one-way prices for a direct ride have been in the tens of thousands of AMD, and round-trip day hire costs more because the driver waits. Prices depend on the car, the season and your negotiating, so agree the total in advance, confirm whether waiting time and the return are included, and ask the driver to stop at the viewpoints.

Ride-hailing apps work well inside Yerevan but are not designed for this distance. Use a booked driver instead. If you want to compare, our guided tour versus DIY post lays out the cost logic.

Option 3: How do I get to Tatev by marshrutka or bus without a car?

There is no simple direct public bus to the monastery. The usual chain is:

Yerevan to Goris. Marshrutkas to Goris have been reported leaving from the Southern Bus Station (Yerevan) a couple of times a day, with morning departures also mentioned from other stations. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours and the fare has been reported at roughly 2,500 to 3,000 AMD. Shared taxis from the same area leave when full and cost somewhat more but are faster.

Goris to Halidzor or Tatev village. A local taxi covers the roughly 30 km to the cable car station or the village. Reported one-way prices are a few thousand AMD; negotiate a return rate if you want the driver to wait.

Cable car or road to the monastery. From Halidzor you can ride the Wings of Tatev, or go on by road if your taxi continues.

Be careful with timing. Afternoon departures from Yerevan can leave you in Goris late, and the return connection from Tatev is the weak link: if you miss it you are sleeping in Goris. We recommend checking the current timetable at the station the day before and treating any schedule you read online (including ours) as indicative.

How does the Wings of Tatev cable car work?

The Wings of Tatev ropeway runs from near Halidzor across the Vorotan gorge to the monastery, about 5.7 km in roughly 12 minutes, and is listed as the longest non-stop double-track reversible aerial tramway. It saves a slow road descent and gives a view of the gorge you do not get from a car.

Price: recent listings show return tickets between roughly 7,000 and 9,000 AMD, with one-way options and lower winter pricing mentioned. Prices change, so check the operator’s current tariff.

Hours: commonly described as running from about 10:00 to 19:00, with some days off (often reported as Monday). Treat this as indicative and verify before you go.

Weather: strong wind or maintenance can close it at short notice, and it is sometimes closed for scheduled servicing. Have a plan B by road.

The Wings of Tatev cable car over the Vorotan gorge Photo: Marcin Konsek / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

For more on the monastery itself and what to see inside, read our Tatev monastery and Wings of Tatev guide.

Option 4: What if I drive myself?

A standard car is fine. Leave Yerevan early (before 8:00 avoids the worst of the exit traffic), fill up before the mountain section, and bring cash, because some small roadside places and guesthouses prefer it. Navigation apps work, though signal can drop in the gorges. Parking is available at the cable car station and near the monastery; confirm the current arrangements locally.

Driving gives you the best stop options on the way: Khor Virap with Mount Ararat, the Areni winery area and Noravank (see our Noravank and Areni itinerary), the Vorotan pass viewpoints, and Karahunj near Sisian. You can drink wine at Areni, but not if you are the driver: drink-driving is not tolerated and the mountain roads are not forgiving.

Where should I stay: Tatev village or Goris?

Tatev village is tiny, with a small number of guesthouses and homestays. The benefit is waking up when tour buses are not there: early morning and evening at the monastery are the calmest hours. The drawback is limited choice, fewer restaurants and a need to book ahead, especially at weekends and in autumn.

Goris is a proper town about 30 to 35 km away, with more guesthouses, cafés and the main marshrutka links. It is the better base if you are using public transport or want to combine Tatev with Karahunj, Shaki waterfall or the Khndzoresk cave village. For wider options outside the capital, see where to stay in Armenia outside Yerevan.

The Vorotan river area in Syunik, on the road toward Tatev Photo: Vyacheslav Argenberg / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0

What do travellers complain about, and who should skip Tatev?

Travellers on Reddit and TripAdvisor commonly raise the same points:

The drive is longer than expected. Day-trippers on public transport often spend more hours travelling than at the monastery.

Timetables and prices drift. Marshrutka times, cable car prices and opening days change, and old blog posts (including some of the numbers above) go stale quickly.

Cable car closures. Wind or maintenance can cancel the ride on the day.

Crowds around midday. Tour groups cluster between late morning and mid-afternoon.

Not much to do if the weather is poor. Fog and rain flatten the gorge views.

Who should skip it: anyone with only one or two days in Armenia who would rather see Yerevan, Garni and Geghard, or Khor Virap and Noravank, without a long haul. If your time is limited, our best day trips from Yerevan list is a better fit.

How can I combine Tatev with Karahunj, Shaki and the south?

Tatev works best as part of a loop. Two days is the realistic minimum: day one to Goris or Tatev with stops at Areni and the Vorotan pass; day two to the monastery in the morning, then back via Sisian. If you have three or four days, add the Karahunj standing stones, Shaki waterfall and Goris’ old streets. Our posts on Karahunj and Syunik’s ancient sites and the southern Armenia road trip map this out in more detail, and our step-by-step trip planning guide shows where Tatev fits in a wider itinerary.

Practical tips before you go

Check the cable car’s current tariff, hours and weather status the day before.

Bring layers: the monastery sits at altitude and can be cool and windy even in summer.

Carry some cash in AMD for taxis and small guesthouses.

Wear shoes with grip; the monastery paths and stone steps are uneven.

Dress modestly for the churches (covered shoulders and knees are respectful).

Download an offline map, since mobile signal is patchy in the gorges.

If you would rather not juggle bus timetables and cable car closures, our small-group and private tours cover the Yerevan to Tatev route with a driver-guide, with or without an overnight. See our tours and ask for a date that suits you.

Tatev (often misspelled Tathev) is about 270 km and 4.5 to 5 hours from Yerevan.
