It is dry, fresh and relatively light on tannin, and the cave next to the village holds the oldest known winemaking site in the world. Plan a half day for the cellars, or a full day with Khor Virap and Noravank.

Question

Short answer

What is Areni Noir?

Armenia’s best-known native red grape, grown on volcanic and limestone soils at high altitude

What does it taste like?

Red cherry, plum, dried herbs, a stony, slightly saline finish; medium to high acidity

How old is the Areni-1 winery?

Dated by archaeologists to around 4100 BC, about 6,000 years old

Distance from Yerevan

Roughly 110 to 120 km, about 2 hours by road

Tasting cost in 2026

Roughly 10 to 20 USD equivalent per winery, check before you go

Best months

May to June and September to October; harvest and the Areni festival are in autumn

Without a car?

Hard by public transport, so use a private driver or a small-group tour

What is Areni wine, and what is Areni Noir?

Areni is both a village and a grape. Areni Noir is a thick-skinned red variety that suits the dry, sunny continental climate of Vayots Dzor, where hot days are followed by cold nights. That swing keeps acidity high and the fruit fresh, which is why good Areni often tastes lighter than its colour suggests.

Many vines in the region are old and grown on their own roots, and plantings climb to around 1,250 metres and higher. If you want the wider story of grapes, regions and history, our guide to Armenian wine covers it. This page stays with Areni itself.

What does Areni wine taste like?

Expect a dry red with red cherry, plum, dried herbs and a mineral edge. Tannins are fine to medium, so it is easy to drink young, and many producers also make versions aged in oak or in a karas, the traditional clay vessel. Alcohol is usually moderate to fairly high for a red, and bottles vary a lot between producers.

Young, steel or neutral oak: bright cherry, drinkable with lunch.

Oak-aged: darker fruit, spice, more structure.

Karas wines: earthier and more savoury, an acquired taste for some.

Rosé, white and fruit wines: many tasting rooms also pour pomegranate or apricot wine, which is sweeter.

Pair it with grilled meat, lavash with cheese and herbs, or dolma. We cover local food in the Armenian food guide.

Vayots Dzor landscape, the high valley where Areni grapes are grown

What is the Areni-1 cave, and can you visit it?

Areni-1 is a cave complex above the Arpa river near Areni village. Excavations that began in 2007 found a pressing platform, fermentation vats, storage jars, grape seeds and vine remains, and chemical tests detected a red wine pigment. The site is dated to around 4100 BC, which makes it the oldest known winery in the world, a claim you will see repeated on every tour.

Be realistic about what you see: this is an archaeological site, not a polished attraction, and the finds are kept off site or under study. Press reports in July 2026 said a cave museum with two halls was nearing completion and aimed to open by the end of the year. We cannot confirm an opening date or ticket price, so ask your driver or the local tourist office before building your day around it.

Which Areni wineries can you visit for tasting?

Names that travellers and tour operators commonly mention in the Areni and Yeghegnadzor area include Areni Winery (established in the 1990s), Old Bridge Winery, a small boutique producer in Yeghegnadzor, Trinity, and Zorah, whose vineyards are at around 1,400 metres. Opening hours, tasting formats and whether you need a reservation change, and some places take only groups or booked visits, so treat this as a starting list, not a guarantee.

How to choose a winery

Book ahead in September and October, when cellars are busy with harvest.

Ask what is included: number of wines, food, cellar tour, language of the guide.

Choose one or two cellars rather than five; palates tire fast at altitude and in heat.

Smaller family cellars usually pour more of their own wine and fewer imported snacks.

How do you get to Areni from Yerevan without a car?

Public transport to Areni exists, since minibuses to Yeghegnadzor and Jermuk pass the area, but it is slow and awkward for winery visits that sit off the main road. Most travellers go with a private driver, a taxi booked for the day, or a small-group tour. Our getting around Armenia page explains minibuses, and driving in Armenia covers rentals if you prefer your own wheels.

A typical day: leave Yerevan around 8:30, stop at Khor Virap for Ararat views, taste wine near Areni, eat lunch, then see Noravank in the afternoon. The full route is in our Noravank and Areni itinerary, and the surrounding province is in the Jermuk and Vayots Dzor guide.

Red cliffs near Noravank monastery in the Amaghu gorge

How much does Areni wine cost, and how do you buy or ship it?

At the winery, a tasting usually costs the equivalent of roughly 10 to 20 USD in 2026, with food or a cellar tour pushing it higher. Bottles sold at the cellar commonly range from a few thousand drams for simple wines to considerably more for aged or karas bottlings. Prices differ by producer and vintage, so ask to see the shelf price before you taste.

Carry-on or checked: bottles go in checked bags, wrapped in clothing or a padded wine sleeve, as liquids over the airport limit cannot go in cabin bags.

Duty: allowances differ for EU, UK, US and other travellers; check your own customs rules and keep receipts.

Shipping: some wineries can arrange export for larger orders, but expect paperwork and cost; ask directly.

Back home: a few Armenian producers are sold by specialist importers abroad, so you can often reorder.

If you also want brandy or a Yerevan tasting evening, see Armenian wine tasting in Yerevan and our brandy guide.

What do travellers complain about, and who should skip this?

Travellers on Reddit and TripAdvisor tend to raise the same few points. Knowing them saves money and mood.

Tourist-trap tastings: a roadside stall that pours sweet fruit wine, sells generic bottles and relies on tour buses. Ask which grapes you will taste and whether the winery makes its own wine.

Driving after tasting: Armenia has strict limits and the roads near Noravank are narrow and winding. Hire a driver or share the driving, and do not assume tolerance.

Heat in harvest season: July to September can be hot, and October crowds at the festival are heavy. Start early and drink water between wines.

Underwhelming cave visit: some arrive expecting a museum and find an excavation site. Adjust expectations until the museum is open.

Uneven quality: a few bottles are oxidised or very rustic. Taste before buying a case.

Skip Areni if you dislike red wine, have no time beyond a day in Yerevan, or travel with small children who will tire of a long road day. A cheaper stand-in is a good tasting in the capital.

When is the best time to visit Areni?

Late spring, May and June, is green and mild. September and early October bring harvest, vine colour and the annual Areni wine festival, held each October; confirm the date, since it changes. Summer is hot at midday, and winter is cold, with snow possible on higher roads, though cellars remain open by arrangement. Our best time to visit Armenia page has month-by-month detail.

What would we do differently?

We would stay one night in Yeghegnadzor or the surrounding area rather than driving back, so the tasting is relaxed. We would book the cellar in advance in autumn, taste at only two producers, and compare one young and one aged Areni. And we would carry a cool bag in summer, since a hot car is hard on bottles.

If you would rather taste in peace than navigate mountain roads, our private and small-group tours cover Areni, Noravank and Khor Virap with a local driver-guide. See our Armenia tours and tell us your pace.

Areni wine comes from Armenia’s high Vayots Dzor valley, home of the Areni Noir grape and the 6,000-year-old Areni-1 cave.
