Armenia is an easy country in practical terms, but the mountains, summer heat and winter roads are real. This guide is general information, not medical advice: check your national health authority and your own doctor before you travel.

Question

Short answer

Is tap water drinkable?

Generally considered so in Yerevan; varies elsewhere. Bottled water is cheap and everywhere.

Emergency number?

112 from any mobile phone.

Pharmacies?

Very common in cities and towns; many drugs over the counter, but bring your own prescriptions.

Insurance?

Strongly advised; check hiking altitude limits and medical evacuation.

Altitude?

Yerevan about 1,000 m, Sevan about 1,900 m, Selim Pass about 2,400 m, Aragats above 4,000 m.

Hottest months?

July and August, especially in Yerevan and the Ararat plain.

Vaccines?

Ask your doctor or travel clinic; routine vaccines should be up to date.

Is tap water safe to drink in Armenia?

In Yerevan the answer most residents and guides give is yes: people drink from the tap and the city is dotted with small public fountains, many fed by mountain springs. We would still call it “generally considered drinkable” rather than guaranteed, because quality can differ between old buildings, villages and guesthouses with their own tanks. A practical approach is to drink tap water in Yerevan if your host does, and to buy bottled water or use a filter bottle in the regions.

Armenia also has a strong mineral water tradition. Jermuk and Bjni are household names, and you will see them on every restaurant table. If you are new to the country, mineral water is a pleasant way to ease in, though very mineral-rich water is not meant to be drunk by the litre. Water is cheap, so there is no reason to take a risk when you are unsure.

How careful do I need to be with food?

Most travellers eat everything from khorovats to street lahmajun without trouble, and Armenian hospitality means you will often be handed more than you ordered. Ordinary precautions apply: choose busy places with high turnover, eat meat that is fully cooked, wash fruit you buy at the market, and be a little careful with dairy and salads in hot weather when food has been sitting out. Wash your hands before eating, since fresh market produce is handled a lot.

If you do get an upset stomach, rest, drink plenty of fluids and use oral rehydration salts, which pharmacies sell. See a doctor if it lasts more than a couple of days or comes with fever. Our packing list and practical tips covers what to put in a small medical kit.

Village houses with Mount Ararat in the distance, Armenia

Pharmacies, prescriptions and medicines

You are rarely more than a few minutes from a pharmacy in Yerevan, Gyumri or any provincial town, and many are open late; some stay open around the clock in the capital. Pharmacists often help with minor complaints, and many common medicines (painkillers, antihistamines, stomach remedies, creams) are sold over the counter. Rules differ from the EU or North America, though, and some products you buy without a prescription at home may need one here, or the reverse.

Bring enough of your regular prescription medicine for the whole trip, in its original packaging, with a doctor’s letter showing the generic name.

Do not count on finding the same brand; take the generic (active ingredient) name with you.

Keep medicines in your hand luggage, and check your airline and your national rules if you carry controlled drugs.

Bring any allergy medication, inhalers or an adrenaline pen if you use one, and tell your guide or host.

What is the emergency number, and what care can I expect?

The emergency number is 112, free from mobile phones. Yerevan has a range of public hospitals and private clinics, and for routine problems such as an infection, a minor injury or a prescription, a private clinic in the capital is usually the quickest option for visitors. Staff in Yerevan often speak some English, and Russian is widely understood. Outside Yerevan, facilities are simpler, and for anything serious you will normally be transferred to the capital.

Practical steps: save your accommodation address in Armenian on your phone, keep your insurer’s 24-hour number offline, and pay and claim back later if the clinic asks for payment. Standards and costs vary, so we do not quote prices here. For the wider safety picture, see our guide on whether Armenia is safe for travellers.

What should I check in travel insurance for Armenia?

Most complaints from travellers on forums about insurance are not about Armenia but about the small print. Before you buy, check these points:

Hiking and altitude: some policies exclude trekking above a stated altitude. Aragats is above 4,000 m, and plenty of popular walks start above 2,000 m.

Medical evacuation and repatriation: for remote areas, a rescue or transfer to Yerevan can be the biggest cost.

Activities: paragliding, zip lines, horse riding and skiing are often optional extras.

Pre-existing conditions: declare them, or the claim can be refused.

Car and motorbike: medical cover may not apply if you drive without the right licence. See our notes on working remotely from Armenia if you plan a longer stay, since a short-trip policy may not cover months abroad.

Keep copies of the policy number and emergency line offline, photograph receipts, and read your insurer’s rules on when they must be called.

Pink tuff buildings and street life in central Yerevan

How does altitude affect you in Armenia?

Armenia is high. Yerevan is at roughly 1,000 m, Lake Sevan sits near 1,900 m, Selim Pass on the road to Vayots Dzor is about 2,400 m, and Mount Aragats rises above 4,000 m. Most visitors notice nothing in Yerevan or at Sevan. Some feel breathless, light-headed or get a headache above roughly 2,500 m, and people differ a lot, regardless of fitness.

Spend a night or two in Yerevan or Dilijan before you go higher.

Drink water, go slowly, and skip heavy alcohol the night before a big climb.

If a headache gets worse, or you feel nauseous or confused, go down; do not push on.

If you plan Aragats, Lake Kari or Amberd, read our Mount Aragats guide first, since weather at the top can change quickly even in summer. Speak to your doctor beforehand if you have a heart or lung condition.

Heat, sun and insects in summer

July and August can be very hot in Yerevan and the Ararat plain, often with little shade at sights such as Khor Virap and Garni. Plan outdoor visits for early morning or late afternoon, wear a hat and sunscreen (the sun is stronger at altitude), and carry more water than you think you need. Heat plus a long monastery climb is a common reason for headaches and fatigue.

Mosquitoes, ticks and other insects exist, especially in forested areas such as Dilijan and in the north. Use repellent, check yourself after hiking in long grass, and be sensible around stray dogs and unfamiliar animals; ask your doctor or travel clinic what they advise about rabies and tick-borne illness for your plans. Wash and seek medical advice after any bite or scratch from an animal.

Winter roads, vaccines and who should be extra careful

Winter brings snow and ice on mountain passes, and travellers who rent cars often underestimate this. Roads over Selim, towards Jermuk and on the Sevan highway can be slow or closed after snowfall. Check conditions, use proper tyres, avoid night driving in the mountains, and leave extra time. Our winter in Armenia guide goes into more detail.

For vaccines, we are not doctors: see a GP or travel clinic four to eight weeks before you go, make sure routine vaccines (such as tetanus and measles) are up to date, and ask about hepatitis A and others given your plans. Your national health authority publishes country-specific advice and is the right place to check.

Who should think twice or plan more carefully

Travellers on forums sometimes say they were caught out by the same things: assuming a hospital is close when they are deep in the regions, buying a cheap policy that excluded hiking, and underestimating summer sun. If you have a heart or lung condition, need regular specialist treatment, or are pregnant, talk to your doctor before booking and choose routes with Yerevan within a few hours.

If you would rather not manage the logistics, our small-group and private tours include a local guide who knows the nearest clinics and pharmacies and paces the day for altitude and heat. See our tours or tell us about any dietary or health needs before you book.

Practical health notes for Armenia: tap water, pharmacies, emergency number 112, travel insurance checks, altitude at Sevan and Aragats, summer heat and winter roads.
