It works, but only if you accept that seven days feels tight in the south: the roads are good but mountainous, and every monastery sits at the end of a detour.

Question

Short answer

Is one week enough?

Yes for the highlights, not for everything. Distances look short, but you climb passes above 2,000 m, follow gorges and slow down for villages. Travellers on Reddit and TripAdvisor often say the same thing after a week: they loved it and wished they had booked ten days. Seven days is the workable minimum for a country with real variety: the capital, Soviet and ancient history, mountain monasteries, wine country and a big lake.

The honest advice is to choose one direction. The south gives you the postcard route; the north gives you forests, canyons and fewer visitors. Trying to cram both leaves you in the car for most of the day, and you will remember the highway more than the monasteries.

The classic 7-day route (south)

Days 1 and 2: Yerevan

Arrive, walk the centre, climb the Cascade for the view toward Ararat on a clear day, and eat well. Spend the second day on the Matenadaran, the Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd and the open-air markets. Our 3 days in Yerevan plan has the details if you prefer to stay longer in the capital. Two nights is enough to feel the city without losing the regions.

Day 3: Garni, Geghard and back

Garni temple is about 30 to 40 minutes from Yerevan by car, Geghard roughly 15 minutes further up the gorge. Done in a morning, it leaves the afternoon free. By public transport you take a city bus to the Gai station area and then a local bus towards Garni and Goght, and the last stretch to Geghard may mean a taxi or a walk. Schedules change, so ask locally the day before.

Aerial view of Tatev monastery on its cliff edge in Syunik

Day 4: Khor Virap, Areni, Noravank, then Goris

This is the big day. Khor Virap is about an hour from Yerevan, with Mount Ararat across the border behind it in good weather. From there it is roughly 70 minutes to Areni, then about 25 minutes up the gorge to Noravank. From Noravank to Goris plan on two to two and a half hours over the Vorotan pass. In total, expect eight to ten hours with stops. Start early; do not add a winery tasting if you are driving.

Day 5: Goris and Tatev

Tatev is about 35 km from Goris, around 40 minutes. The Wings of Tatev cable car (about 7,000 AMD return in 2026, check before you go) crosses the Vorotan gorge in about 12 minutes; it runs on a seasonal timetable and closes for maintenance in late autumn. Many travellers sleep in Goris or in the villages near the cable car, which lets you reach the monastery before the day tours arrive. Our Southern Armenia road trip guide covers Goris, Kapan and Meghri if you have more time.

Days 6 and 7: Return via Sevan or Dilijan

Goris back to Yerevan is around four hours. If you want a scenic slow return, go back to Yerevan, sleep, then use the last day for Lake Sevan and Sevanavank (about an hour out) or Dilijan (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Many people finish with a night in Dilijan and an early transfer to the airport. Do not schedule a flight on the morning after a long mountain drive without a buffer.

Sevanavank monastery on the shore of Lake Sevan

How long do the drives really take?

These are typical driving times without long stops, in good weather. Add time for photos, breakfast and traffic leaving Yerevan.

Yerevan to Garni: 30 to 40 minutes; to Geghard: 45 to 55 minutes

Yerevan to Khor Virap: about an hour; Khor Virap to Areni: about 70 minutes

Areni to Noravank: about 25 minutes; Noravank to Goris: 2 to 2.5 hours

Goris to Tatev: about 40 minutes; Goris to Yerevan: about 4 hours

Yerevan to Sevan: about an hour; Sevan to Dilijan: 45 to 60 minutes; Dilijan to Yerevan: 1.5 to 2 hours

Yerevan to Gyumri: about 2 to 2.5 hours; Yerevan to Haghpat: 3.5 to 4 hours

The alternative: a north loop

If the south does not call you, try Dilijan, Sevan, Haghpat and Sanahin, Gyumri and back. Spend a night in Dilijan for forest walks and its old quarter, add Lake Sevan on the way, drive on to Vanadzor and the Debed canyon for the UNESCO monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin (both free to visit, donations welcome), then sleep in Alaverdi or Gyumri and return to Yerevan in about two hours. The hops are shorter, you change hotels less often, and the monasteries are quieter. Details are in our northern Armenia guide.

What to cut with 5 days, what to add with 10

With five days, drop Goris and Tatev. Do Yerevan (two nights), Garni and Geghard, a Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank day returning to Yerevan, and Sevan with Dilijan. With ten days, you can do both loops comfortably, add Kapan or Meghri, Jermuk, or the Aragats area. Our perfect 10-day Armenia itinerary shows how the pieces fit together.

Public transport, rental car or a tour?

Marshrutkas reach Sevan, Dilijan, Gyumri, Vanadzor and Goris cheaply (roughly 800 to 3,500 AMD depending on the route in 2026), but they leave when full and not every village stop has a regular service. A rental car gives freedom for Khor Virap, Noravank and Tatev; read our driving in Armenia and car rental guide first, as mountain roads and local driving styles take adjustment. Tours or a driver make sense for the long south day, where fatigue and navigation are the main risks. A mix is common: a driver for the south, buses for the rest.

Best months for a one-week trip

April to June brings green hills and mild weather, though high passes can hold snow into April. September and October are dry with warm days and harvest season. July and August are hot in Yerevan and around Areni, yet the highlands near Sevan and Dilijan are pleasant. Winter shortens the day and can close roads, so it suits a Yerevan-plus-Sevan plan better than the full south.

Where to sleep on a 7-day route

In Yerevan, stay in the centre for walking. In the south, Goris offers guesthouses and small hotels, and Halidzor or Tatev village is closer to the cable car. On the return, Dilijan has a good choice of guesthouses; Sevan has lakeside hotels that are busy in summer. We cover options outside the capital in our where to stay in Armenia outside Yerevan guide. Book Goris and Dilijan ahead in peak months.

Solo traveller notes

Armenia is easy for solo travellers: people are curious and helpful, and guesthouse hosts often arrange a driver. The practical challenge is transport cost on long days, since a car and driver cost the same for one person as for three. Joining a small group for the south or splitting a taxi from your hostel is the usual fix. Keep your phone charged and download offline maps for mountain roads.

What travellers complain about, and who should skip this plan

Common complaints: too much time in the car, rushing Tatev for a photo, and underestimating the Noravank to Goris stretch. Skip the full south route if you only have a week and dislike long drives; the north loop or a Yerevan plus Sevan, Dilijan plan will be more relaxed. If you want to stay in one hotel, base yourself in Yerevan and do day trips instead.

If you would rather not manage the logistics, our small-group and private tours cover the south route with a local guide and a driver.
