The plan below puts the centre on day one, the memorial, Matenadaran and a brandy tasting on day two, and Garni and Geghard (or Khor Virap) on day three, with walking distances and options for rain, heat and winter. Opening hours change, so check them before you go.

Question

Short answer

Is 3 days enough?

Yes for Yerevan plus one half-day trip; not for the rest of Armenia

Day 1

Republic Square, Cascade, Opera area, Vernissage if it is a weekend

Day 2

Matenadaran, genocide memorial, brandy tasting, evening on Republic Square

Day 3

Half-day: Garni and Geghard, or Khor Virap, or Etchmiadzin and Zvartnots

Walking per day

Roughly 5 to 9 km on days 1 and 2; day 3 is mostly by road

Getting around

Walk the centre, use the metro or taxi apps for the rest

Closed days to watch

Matenadaran and the genocide museum are closed on Mondays; Matenadaran also on Sundays

How should I plan the three days?

This is a realistic pace, not a checklist; for the full menu of options see our things to do in Yerevan. As a rough distance guide: Republic Square to the Cascade is about 1.2 km, Republic Square to the Opera under 1 km, and the Cascade to the Opera around 600 m. Together they make a loop of about 3 km that you can walk in half a day with stops.

Group by area, not by list. The centre (Republic Square, Cascade, Opera, Northern Avenue, most cafes) is compact and best walked. The sights that need transport are Matenadaran, the memorial, the brandy company and, on day three, anything outside the city. If you can choose your arrival day, remember that Vernissage is a weekend market and the museums are closed on some weekdays, so fit the calendar to the plan: a Friday arrival gives you the centre on Friday, the market or the museums on Saturday, and a day trip on Sunday. If you arrive earlier in the week, simply swap the market for another walk and keep the museums for Tuesday to Saturday.

Day 1: what is the best way to see central Yerevan?

Morning: Republic Square (09:00)

Start at Republic Square, the pink-tuff ensemble that defines the city. Walk around it once, look at the museum building and the fountains, and have coffee nearby. The evening fountain show is covered on day two, so you do not need to see it now.

Fountains and flowerbed on Republic Square in central Yerevan Photo: Freepik

Late morning: Vernissage or a walk (10:30)

If it is a Saturday or Sunday, go to Vernissage market, a few minutes’ walk from the square, and browse before the crowds. Our guide to souvenirs from Armenia explains what to buy and how to bargain. On a weekday, walk instead to Freedom Square and the Opera area, about 800 m from Republic Square.

Afternoon: Cascade and the Opera (13:30)

Walk from Republic Square to the Cascade, around 1.2 km, 15 to 20 minutes on the flat-then-rising approach. The giant stairway links the city to Victory Park above, with sculpture on the terraces and a view over the city, and on a clear day, Mount Ararat. The art centre inside has opened on set days (recently Friday to Sunday), so check its schedule if you want to go in. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Then walk down to the Opera and its park, where cafes fill up on summer evenings.

The Cascade steps in Yerevan

Evening: eat and wander (19:00)

Pick a restaurant or wine bar near the centre for dinner. Typical choices are Armenian grill (khorovats) restaurants, Caucasian home-cooking places and wine bars with local bottles. For ideas on snacks and sweets, see our Yerevan street food, coffee and sweets guide.

Day 2: which museums and sights should I fit in?

Morning: Matenadaran (10:00)

Matenadaran, the manuscript institute and museum, sits at the top of Mashtots Avenue, about 1.5 km uphill from Republic Square (20 to 25 minutes’ walk, or a short taxi). On its official site it lists opening Tuesday to Saturday around 10:00 to 17:50, closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays, with a modest adult ticket, so check before you go. Give it 1.5 to 2 hours. Our guide to Yerevan museums, including Matenadaran and the genocide memorial has more detail.

Afternoon: Tsitsernakaberd (13:30)

The Armenian genocide memorial and museum are on a hill west of the centre, a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride. The museum lists free admission and is closed on Mondays, with shorter hours on Sundays and seasonal winter hours. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours and dress respectfully. It is a sombre visit, so build in a quiet half hour afterwards.

Late afternoon: a brandy tasting (16:30)

Tours at brandy producers usually need a booking and last around an hour, with a tasting at the end. Read our guide to Armenian brandy and the Yerevan Brandy Company to choose between producers and age levels. Book ahead in high season and ask about start times.

Evening: Republic Square after dark (20:00)

Return to Republic Square for the fountain show, which runs in the warm months. Check the season, as it does not run year-round.

Day 3: which half-day trip is best?

Pick one. Leave around 09:00 to be back by early afternoon.

Garni and Geghard (east, 30 to 40 km): the Hellenistic-style temple and the rock-cut monastery. Allow 5 to 6 hours including transport. See our best day trips from Yerevan for how to reach them by shared transport or tour.

Khor Virap (south, around 45 km): the monastery with the closest view of Mount Ararat, best on a clear morning. About 4 to 5 hours return.

Etchmiadzin and Zvartnots (west, 10 to 20 km): the cathedral complex and the ruined 7th-century cathedral. Shorter, good if you want a lighter day.

Back in town, spend the evening on the Cascade lawn or in a wine bar, or revisit whichever part of day one you enjoyed most.

What if it rains, is too hot or is winter?

Rain: swap the Cascade and Vernissage for museums and cafes. Matenadaran, the memorial’s indoor museum, the galleries and a long lunch fill the day.

Heat (July and August): do outdoor sights before 11:00 and after 17:00, take a long lunch indoors, and carry water. Day trips are best at dawn.

Winter: days are short and can be cold, with snow in some years. Keep the walking sections short, add museums and cafes, and check road conditions before a day trip. Garni and Geghard are usually still reachable, though Khor Virap in winter can be very atmospheric if the sky is clear.

How do I get around, and where do I eat?

Walk the centre, take the metro for a few useful hops and use taxi apps for the memorial and the brandy company. Our guide to getting around Yerevan by metro, bus and taxi app covers fares and how to pay.

For food, think in types of places rather than names: a khorovats grill for dinner, a bakery or lavash oven for breakfast, a Caucasian home-cooking place for lunch, a cafe by the Opera for coffee, and a wine bar for the evening. Browse Google Maps and reviews for current favourites, since places open and close.

When is the best time to go, and what should I skip if short on time?

Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable. Summer is hot in town but lively in the evenings; winter is cold and quieter. If you have less than three days, drop the brandy tasting first, then the day trip, and keep the Cascade, Republic Square and one museum, and take Garni and Geghard only if you have a half-day.

What do solo travellers say?

Solo travellers on Reddit and TripAdvisor describe Yerevan as easy: central stays, plenty of cafes with other solos, and taxi apps for late rides. Common complaints are unclear day-trip logistics, closed museums on the wrong day, and trying to see everything. Stay in the centre, check opening days, and book one tour or group trip for day three if you do not want to coordinate transport.

If you would rather not juggle shared taxis and opening hours, our small-group and private tours cover the day-three options and can add a city walk or brandy tasting. See our tours and plan your days with us.

A realistic 3 days in Yerevan: day-by-day plan with walking distances, the Cascade, Matenadaran, brandy, a half-day trip, plus rain, heat and winter options and solo notes.

[1
654,166,655,114,653
post-11570","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog","tag-3-days-in-yerevan","tag-armenia-travel","tag-city-break","tag-yerevan","tag-yerevan-itinerary

<meta name="description" content="3 days in Yerevan, planned hour by hour: Republic Square, Cascade, Matenadaran, brandy and a half-day to Garni or Khor Virap.
