The cheapest and most common option is a marshrutka (minibus) from the Kilikia bus station; the most comfortable for the budget is a private transfer; and the most atmospheric is the overnight train. Below is an honest comparison for 2026, written by a Yerevan team that sends travellers along this corridor all the time.

Question

Short answer

Question

Short answer

How long is the trip?

About 5 to 6 hours by road including the border; about 10 hours by overnight train.

Where do marshrutkas leave?

Mostly from the Kilikia bus station in Yerevan; some operators also pick up in the centre.

Rough cost in 2026

Marshrutka a few thousand to about 9,000 AMD; train and shared taxi more; private car roughly 50,000 to 120,000 AMD per car. Confirm current prices.

Which border crossing?

Bagratashen (Armenia) to Sadakhlo (Georgia), open round the clock.

Border time

Usually 30 to 60 minutes; up to two hours in summer queues.

Documents

Passport (national ID cards are not enough for most travellers).

Best for a stopover

Private car or tour via Debed Canyon, Haghpat and Sanahin.

What are your options from Yerevan to Tbilisi?

There are five realistic choices: a scheduled marshrutka or minibus, an overnight train, a shared taxi, a private transfer and driving yourself. Flights between the two capitals are limited and rarely worth it once you add airport time. Which one suits you depends on budget, luggage and whether you want to stop on the way.

Marshrutka and minibus

This is what most travellers do. Departures leave through the morning and early afternoon from the Kilikia bus station, and some operators run vans from the city centre. Booking ahead by phone or messenger is wise in peak season, and the departure time is “when the van is full” at smaller operators. Vans arrive in Tbilisi near the Avlabari metro or at the Ortachala bus station, depending on the operator. Expect a modern minibus rather than an old one, but leg room is tight. Our Armenia transport guide explains how marshrutkas work in general.

The forested Debed Canyon in Lori, the valley the road follows towards the Georgian border Photo: Lilit.amiraghyan / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Overnight train

The Yerevan to Tbilisi sleeper has been running every second night on a seasonal timetable: in winter it has left Yerevan around 21:30 and arrived around 07:30. It departs from the Sasuntsi David station, and passport checks happen in your berth around the middle of the night. Classes range from open carriages to two-berth compartments. It is slow (around 10 hours) and has no dining car, so bring water and snacks. For many travellers the point is the experience and an extra night of accommodation saved. Check the timetable and book through the Armenian railway site or at the station, because the pattern changes by season and we could not confirm every detail for the coming months.

Shared taxi and BlaBlaCar

Shared taxis and ride-sharing cars fill seats at the same stations and often cost a little more than a marshrutka but save time. They leave when full. Agree the price before you get in and check that your luggage fits.

Private transfer

A private car with a driver from Yerevan to Tbilisi typically costs roughly 50,000 to 120,000 AMD in 2026, depending on the vehicle and whether you stop on the way. Split between three or four people it can be cheaper than the train. It is the best option if you arrive on a late flight or have heavy luggage.

Driving yourself

You can drive via Dilijan or via Vanadzor and the Debed Canyon. The border is straightforward, but rental cars are the issue: see our driving in Armenia and car rental guide for what to ask your rental firm about Georgia.

What is the Bagratashen–Sadakhlo border like?

Calm and bureaucratic. In a marshrutka everyone gets off for passport control on the Armenian side, walks through, and boards again after Georgian control. Queues of trucks can lengthen the wait, but passenger lines move reasonably. Allow 30 to 60 minutes; allow up to two hours in July and August or on holiday weekends.

Bring your passport, not just an ID card. Citizens of the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and many other countries can usually enter both countries visa-free, but rules change, so check the official sources of both states before you travel. Have a hotel address ready for Georgia. If you have visited Azerbaijan, expect more questions in some cases.

Currency and money

Armenia uses the dram (AMD) and Georgia the lari (GEL). Marshrutka drivers often accept dram and sometimes dollars or euros, but do not count on it. Withdraw a small amount of lari at an ATM in Tbilisi after arrival rather than changing at the border, where rates are poor. Cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi. Our guide to getting around Yerevan helps on the Armenian side before you leave.

Which option should you choose?

If you travel alone on a budget, take the morning marshrutka: it is the cheapest, runs most often and gets you to Tbilisi in daylight. If you are two to four people with luggage, a private car usually costs about the same per head as a good seat elsewhere and lets you stop. If you enjoy slow travel and want to save a night of accommodation, the sleeper train is worth trying, but it suits flexible schedules, not tight ones. Flights between Yerevan and Tbilisi have been limited and seasonal, so most people skip them; if you see one, add airport time at both ends before comparing it with a 5 to 6 hour road trip.

Can you stop on the way?

Yes, and this is the best argument for a private car or small tour. The road follows the Debed Canyon through Lori province, past the UNESCO monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, with Akhtala close by. A half-day stop at Haghpat and Sanahin adds 2 to 3 hours to the journey. You can read more about the area in our northern Armenia guide. Dilijan is another good stopover if you take the Dilijan route.

Haghpat monastery in northern Armenia, one of the stops on the road towards Georgia Photo: Diego Delso / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

What travellers complain about

Marshrutkas that wait to fill, so the departure time slips.

Tight seating and little room for large bags.

Drivers who stop for long breaks or drive fast on bends.

The border queue in summer.

Late arrival in Tbilisi at a bus station outside the old town, and the question of how to get to your hotel.

Train timetable confusion and assumptions that it runs daily.

Mitigate it: leave early, keep documents and water handy, and book the first departure of the day.

Tips for solo travellers combining both countries

Take the morning departure so that you reach Tbilisi in daylight and can check in without stress.

Pick up a local SIM or eSIM in each country, or check that your plan covers Georgia before you cross.

Georgia and Armenia are compared in detail in our Armenia or Georgia article, which helps if you are deciding how many days to give each country.

If you travel alone and want company on the long road, shared transfers and small-group tours are an easy way to split the cost and meet people.

The featured photo shows St Nicholas church in Tbilisi, not a panorama of the city; the old town is walkable once you arrive.

For a bigger picture of whether to join a group or plan everything yourself, see guided tour or DIY in Armenia.

If you would rather cross with a local driver and see Debed Canyon, Haghpat and Sanahin on the way, our private and small-group tours may include the transfer to the border or to Tbilisi. See our tours or send your dates and we will check what is possible.

How to get from Yerevan to Tbilisi in 2026: marshrutka, bus, overnight train, shared taxi, private transfer or your own car, with the border crossing explained.

[1
451,329,263,452,450
post-11520","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog","tag-armenia-georgia-border","tag-caucasus-travel","tag-marshrutka","tag-overnight-train","tag-yerevan-to-tbilisi

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"BlogPosting","@id":"https://solotravel.am/hy/yerevan-to-tbilisi-bus-train-taxi-guide/#blogposting","name":"Yerevan to Tbilisi: Bus, Train, Taxi Compared | Solotravel","headline":"Yerevan to Tbilisi: Bus, Marshrutka, Train and Taxi","author":{"@id":"https://solotravel.am/hy/author/d-m-barseghyan/#author"},"publisher":{"@id":"https://solotravel.am/hy/#organization"},"image":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://solotravel.am/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sta-tbilisi-old-town-scaled.jpg","width":1920,"height":1080,"caption":"St. Nicholas church, Tbilisi, Georgia.
