Jermuk, a spa town in the south, has a much smaller ski area. Do not expect the Alps, but do expect uncrowded slopes on most weekdays, low prices and English that is good enough in the hotels.

Question

Short answer

When is the ski season?

Roughly December to March; mid-December to early March is the reliable window. Some sources list operation into April, so check conditions.

Where is the main resort?

Tsaghkadzor, about 50 km north of Yerevan, around one hour by road in normal conditions.

How big is it?

Roughly 27 to 30 km of marked runs depending on the source, between about 1,970 and 2,820 m, with a cableway and several lifts.

Is it good for experts?

Not really. Terrain is mostly beginner and intermediate with a small share of harder runs.

What does it cost?

Day lift tickets are quoted at roughly 10,000 to 13,000 AMD, rental at about 5,000 to 8,000 AMD a day. Prices change each season, so check before you go.

And Jermuk?

A small, gentle ski area at about 2,100 to 2,400 m, about 170 km from Yerevan. Better as a spa-town winter break than as a ski week.

Can I go without a car?

Yes, to Tsaghkadzor by marshrutka or taxi from Yerevan. Jermuk is easier with a driver or an organised trip.

Who is it for?

First-timers, families, budget skiers and anyone adding a day on snow to a winter city break.

When is the ski season in Armenia, and is the snow reliable?

Tsaghkadzor sits between roughly 1,970 and 2,820 metres, high enough for a consistent winter, and the main season is usually quoted as December to March. Several guides give early December to late April as the full window, but the safe planning range is mid-December to early March, with January and February the most dependable. Resorts supplement natural snow with snowmaking on the main beginner and intermediate runs, though how much is available changes from year to year.

As of early October 2026 we could not confirm official opening dates or the 2026/27 price list, which are normally announced close to the season. Before you book, check the resort’s current operating information and weather reports, and keep your dates flexible. In a poor snow year, the lower runs thin out first.

What is skiing in Tsaghkadzor actually like?

The resort is built around a cableway that starts in the village and climbs the mountain in stages, with chairlifts above. Sources differ on the exact number of lifts (between five and seven depending on how rope tows and the cableway are counted) and on total piste length (about 27 to 30 km), which is typical of how loosely resort statistics are reported. What is consistent: roughly 40 to 45 percent of runs are easy, a similar share is intermediate, and only a small portion is difficult. The longest descents run several kilometres from the upper station towards the village.

Visitors say the views over the surrounding ranges are a highlight on clear days, and that the mountain feels relaxed compared with big Alpine resorts. The base area has hotels, restaurants and cafes, a ski school with instructors, and rental shops. Our winter overview, Armenia in winter, covers the rest of the season if you are combining skiing with sightseeing.

Skiers on a chairlift during the ski season at Tsaghkadzor, Armenia Photo: wirestock / Freepik

How much does it cost, and what about lessons and rental?

Armenia is one of the cheaper places in Europe and the Caucasus to ski. For 2026, travel guides quote adult day tickets of roughly 10,000 to 13,000 AMD, and multi-day passes that are cheaper per day; children and older visitors may get discounts. Ski rental is usually quoted at about 5,000 to 8,000 AMD per day, snowboard rental slightly higher, with helmets extra. The cableway also sells single rides, which suits non-skiers who want the view. Treat all of these as ranges only: confirm the price list for 2026/27 with the resort or your hotel.

Lessons are available through the ski school and private instructors. If you want English-speaking instruction, ask when you book rather than at the lift; availability and level of English vary by instructor and day. Bring your own helmet and goggles if you are particular about fit, and book rental in advance on busy weekends.

How do you get to Tsaghkadzor from Yerevan, and where should you stay?

It is about 50 km north of the capital, usually an hour by car, longer on a busy winter weekend or in snow. Marshrutkas to Tsaghkadzor have been reported to leave from Yerevan’s Kilikia bus station (confirm the departure point and times locally), and a taxi or a driver is the comfortable option with ski gear. Day trips are realistic: leave early, ski, and be back in the evening. For the road side of winter travel, see our guide to driving in Armenia and car rental.

Hotels in the village range from large international-style properties to small guesthouses, with prices that rise on weekends and during the New Year and January holidays. Several guides mention that rates for mid-range hotels are far below Alpine levels. If you want to ski two days, sleeping in the village saves the early drive and lets you use the afternoon light.

Is Jermuk a ski resort or a spa town?

Jermuk is primarily a mineral-water spa town, known for its thermal springs, sanatoriums and a waterfall. Its ski area is small: a gentle slope and a short lift system at around 2,100 to 2,400 metres, with about 3 km of mostly easy terrain according to ski databases, and operating conditions that depend heavily on the snow. It suits beginners, children and anyone who wants a couple of hours on skis followed by a spa. Skiers who want variety, long descents or a busy resort atmosphere should choose Tsaghkadzor.

Jermuk is roughly 170 km from Yerevan, so budget around two and a half to three hours each way in good conditions. It is a winter break rather than a ski day trip. Our guide to Jermuk and Vayots Dzor covers the town, the springs and the area around it.

What would you do in Tsaghkadzor if you do not ski?

The best non-ski stop is Kecharis Monastery, a medieval complex within walking distance of the village. The cableway runs with sightseeing tickets, and spa hotels offer pools and saunas. If you have a car or driver, Lake Sevan in winter is another option: shoreline monasteries, frozen edges of the lake and almost empty roads, though cold winds can make visits short. Read our Lake Sevan guide before you plan the route.

Mount Ararat covered in snow, seen from Armenia

What do travellers complain about, and who should skip it?

Honest feedback from skiers is consistent. Advanced skiers and freeriders run out of terrain in a few days: there is little challenging piste, and the mountain is not set up like a major Alpine resort for off-piste skiing, so take advice before leaving the marked runs. Lift queues are not usually a problem, but on peak weekends and holiday days, local day-trippers can make the cableway and the first chairlifts slow. Travellers sometimes describe grooming, signage and rental gear as basic, and English is more reliable at hotel front desks than on the mountain. Snow conditions in a weak year are the biggest risk.

Compared with the Alps or the Dolomites, you get fewer lifts, less variety and far lower prices. Compared with Bansko or other Balkan resorts, the logic is similar: low cost, mostly easy terrain, and a social feel. Armenia wins on novelty, hospitality and the option to add Yerevan or the monasteries. Skip it if your goal is steep terrain or a week of varied skiing.

What are the road conditions in winter?

The main road to Tsaghkadzor is maintained, but snow and ice can slow traffic, and the last stretch is a mountain road. If you drive yourself, use winter tyres or check that your rental includes them, carry a full tank and avoid late departures on weekends. Routes to Jermuk cross high passes and can close briefly after heavy snowfall. Altitude is a factor too, and if you are unsure about it, read our guide to health, insurance and altitude.

A simple plan for a ski day or weekend

Pick a weekday if you can: weekends in January are the busiest.

Leave Yerevan early, book rental and lessons before you arrive.

Combine skiing with Kecharis Monastery or a spa afternoon.

Bring layers, sunglasses and sunscreen: the mountain sun is strong.

Check weather, road conditions and the resort’s operating status on the day.

If you would rather not manage the drive, rental and timing yourself, we can organise a private winter day trip from Yerevan with a driver and a flexible stop at Kecharis. See our tours or ask us about a ski or spa weekend.

Season, snow, costs and honest expectations for skiing in Armenia: Tsaghkadzor one hour from Yerevan, little Jermuk, who each suits and what non-skiers can do.

[1
120,412,299,410,411
post-11510","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog","tag-jermuk","tag-ski-resort","tag-skiing-in-armenia","tag-tsaghkadzor","tag-winter-in-armenia

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"BlogPosting","@id":"https://solotravel.am/hy/skiing-in-armenia-tsaghkadzor-jermuk/#blogposting","name":"Skiing in Armenia: Tsaghkadzor and Jermuk | Solotravel","headline":"Skiing in Armenia: Tsaghkadzor and Jermuk Guide","author":{"@id":"https://solotravel.am/hy/author/d-m-barseghyan/#author"},"publisher":{"@id":"https://solotravel.am/hy/#organization"},"image":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://solotravel.am/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sta-tsaghkadzor-ski-scaled.jpg","width":1920,"height":1278,"caption":"Chairlift at the Tsaghkadzor ski resort, Armenia.
