EU roaming does not apply here, so your home plan will be expensive or switched off. Below is what we tell guests at our Yerevan office: operators, what to buy, how cards and ATMs behave, and how much cash to carry.

Question

Short answer

Which operators exist?

Three mobile networks: Viva (formerly Viva-MTS), Team (formerly Beeline) and Ucom. All sell tourist-friendly prepaid SIMs.

Do I need my passport?

Yes. SIM registration is mandatory, so bring your passport to the shop or kiosk.

eSIM or physical SIM?

eSIM if your phone supports it and you only need data. A local SIM if you want a number for taxis, hosts and deliveries.

Does EU roaming work?

No. Armenia is outside the EU roaming area. Check your home operator’s rates or switch roaming off.

Currency?

The Armenian dram (AMD). Foreign currency is not accepted in shops; dollars, euros and rubles are exchanged at offices.

Are cards accepted?

Visa and Mastercard widely in Yerevan, contactless and phone wallets often work. Outside the capital, carry cash.

Where to exchange money?

City exchange offices usually beat the airport. Compare two or three boards before you hand over cash.

How much cash per day?

Budget travellers can often manage with the equivalent of a few thousand drams a day in cash in the regions; see the daily habit below.

Which mobile operators work in Armenia in 2026?

Armenia has three mobile operators, and brand names have changed in recent years, which causes confusion in older guides. Viva-MTS rebranded to simply Viva. The network many travellers still remember as Beeline now trades as Team. Ucom has kept its name and is often the one with the loudest supermarket promotions. For a visitor the practical differences are small: all three cover Yerevan and the main towns with 4G, and all three have tourist prepaid offers.

Travellers on Reddit and TripAdvisor tend to say the same thing: Viva is the safe pick if you will leave the main roads, Ucom is often the cheapest for data, and Team is a reasonable middle option. We would not call any of these a mistake. Packages and prices change several times a year, so treat any figure in an article as a rough guide and ask the shop for the current tourist or data bundle.

Tourist SIM or eSIM: which should you choose?

When an eSIM makes sense

If your phone supports eSIM and you mainly need maps, messaging and ride apps, a travel eSIM bought before you fly means data works the moment you land. International eSIM bundles for Armenia are commonly sold in small data packs, often at a few euros or dollars for a week. The trade-off: you usually get no Armenian phone number, and the price per gigabyte is higher than a local SIM. Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi, and switch it on only after landing.

When a local SIM is better

A local prepaid SIM costs a few thousand drams at most for a typical tourist package, according to several recent traveller guides, and gives you a local number. That number matters more than people expect: guesthouse hosts, drivers and taxi apps work through phone calls and SMS codes. If you stay more than a week, drive yourself, or work remotely, a local SIM is the better value. Some operators also offer local eSIMs you can activate by scanning a QR code at the airport kiosk, which is a good compromise for newer phones.

Ask for a bundle with generous data, not just minutes. For one to two weeks, a few gigabytes is enough for most travellers; if you stream or tether a laptop, buy considerably more.

Where should you buy a SIM: airport or city?

Zvartnots airport has operator kiosks in the arrivals area, and they are staffed around the clock according to current traveller guides. The airport is convenient if you land at night or need a working phone to order a taxi. The same bundles in the city are often a little cheaper, and you will find operator shops, supermarket counters and kiosks across Yerevan. If you arrive tired, buy a small bundle at the airport and top up later in town.

Bring your passport, because the operator registers the SIM in your name. The shop assistant normally inserts the card and activates it for you, which is useful if your phone is locked to another operator. If your phone is network-locked at home, ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

What is mobile coverage like in the mountains?

Coverage is good in Yerevan, Gyumri, Dilijan, Sevan, Goris and along the main highways. It becomes patchy on high passes, in deep gorges and on remote hiking trails above roughly 2,500 metres, whatever the operator. Some monasteries sit in valleys where only one network works. If you are driving the southern road to Tatev or planning to hike, download offline maps before you leave and tell your host your route. We cover the road side in our guide to getting around Armenia, and longer trips in the driving and car rental guide.

Moon over the lit city of Yerevan at night Photo: Freepik

Which cards work in Armenia, and what about ATMs?

Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and shops in Yerevan, and tapping a card or phone is common in the city. Cards issued in Russia on the Mir scheme have had limited and changing acceptance, so if that is your only card, do not rely on it and bring cash. For Amex, UnionPay and other schemes, assume acceptance is patchy and have a backup. A card from your home bank, a second card kept separately, and some cash is the sensible set.

ATMs are everywhere in Yerevan and in larger towns, and many machines accept foreign cards. Fees come from two places: your own bank’s foreign-withdrawal charge and, at some banks, a flat fee charged by the Armenian bank. Guides mention fees of roughly 1,500 AMD per withdrawal at one large network, but this changes, so read the screen. If the ATM offers to convert the amount into your home currency, decline and pay in drams: that conversion is almost always the worse rate. Make fewer, larger withdrawals rather than many small ones.

Where to exchange money: airport, banks or exchange offices?

US dollars and euros are exchanged everywhere. Russian rubles and some other currencies are also taken at many city offices. Exchange offices with a visible board in central Yerevan generally offer better rates than banks, and the airport offices are typically worse, sometimes by several percent. Do not exchange on the street. Compare two boards before you commit, count the money at the counter, and keep the receipt.

Bring clean, undamaged notes: offices can refuse torn or heavily marked bills, and newer dollar notes usually get a better rate than old ones. The dram is the only currency for paying in shops and cafes; some taxis and tours quote euros or dollars, but always confirm the currency before you agree a price. The local exchange rate moves, so check the day’s rate on a reliable website before you decide whether a counter is fair.

How much cash do you really need, and what about tipping and bargaining?

Outside Yerevan, assume cash. Village shops, marshrutka drivers, small guesthouses, roadside fruit sellers and many fuel station kiosks may not take cards, or the terminal may be down. Withdraw before you leave the capital, and carry small notes: breaking a large banknote at a market stall is awkward. Some locals use payment apps for transfers, but as a visitor you will mostly use cash and cards.

A simple daily habit that works for many of our guests: pay for hotels and restaurants by card in Yerevan, then carry cash for the day for tickets, taxis, coffee, markets and tips. In the regions, withdraw a larger amount when you pass a bank in a bigger town such as Dilijan, Goris or Gyumri, and treat it as the budget for several days. Our travel costs and budget guide has realistic spending ranges so you can set that number yourself.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not strictly obligatory. In restaurants, check whether a service charge is already on the bill; if not, leaving around 10 percent is common and well received. For taxis, rounding up is enough. For guides and drivers on private tours, a tip is a gesture for good service, not an expectation.

Bargaining

Fixed prices are normal in shops, supermarkets and taxis run on apps. At open-air souvenir markets such as Vernissage in Yerevan, polite bargaining is part of the experience, and a small discount for buying several items is common. Do not haggle over fruit or bread, and do not start a bargain you do not intend to finish.

The banknote in the featured photo is the reverse of a 500 dram note (2017 series). Notes come in many denominations, so keep a few small ones.

Outdoor cafe terrace near Tamanyan Square, Yerevan Photo: Vyacheslav Argenberg / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0

What do travellers complain about, and who should plan differently?

The recurring complaints on forums are small but avoidable. People buy a prepaid eSIM and discover they have no local phone number for a taxi or host. They rely on one card and find it declined at a village shop. They exchange a large sum at the airport, or accept a “convert to your currency” prompt at an ATM and lose a few percent. And they underestimate how many places outside Yerevan take cash only.

Plan differently if you are a digital nomad who needs fast, stable data: compare plans and consider a local SIM plus a backup eSIM, and read our guide for digital nomads in Armenia. If your card is from a country where banks block unusual foreign charges, tell your bank your dates and carry some cash dollars or euros as a backup. For safety habits around cash, scams and exchange, see our guide to common travel mistakes in Armenia.

A quick pre-trip checklist

Check that your phone is unlocked, and whether it supports eSIM.

Decide between an eSIM for data only and a local SIM with a number.

Carry your passport when you buy a SIM.

Tell your bank you are travelling, and keep a second card separate.

Download offline maps and translation packs before mountain days.

Withdraw drams in Yerevan before regional trips, in small and medium notes.

Always decline conversion to your home currency at ATMs and card terminals.

If you would rather not manage SIMs, cash and transport yourself, our small-group and private tours handle the logistics, so you only need a card
