Real distances, honest driving times, and a place to sleep every night.

Quick facts

Detail

Total driving

Roughly 1,400 to 1,500 km over ten days

Longest single day

Yerevan to Goris, about 240 km and 4 to 5 hours

Bases used

Yerevan (4 nights), Goris or Halidzor (2), Dilijan (2), Gyumri (1)

Best months

Late May to mid June, and September

Transport

Rental car or car with local driver; roads are paved throughout

Typical 2026 mid-range budget

Roughly 90 to 140 euros per person per day including car, hotel and food

How this route is shaped, and why

Armenia is small on the map and slow on the ground. The country is about the size of Belgium, but almost every road climbs a pass, and average speeds sit closer to 55 km/h than 90. The mistake first-time visitors make is treating Yerevan as a base for everything. It works beautifully for the Ararat plain and for Garni, and it does not work at all for Tatev, which is a four-hour drive each way.

So this itinerary moves. You keep Yerevan as your opening and closing base, push south for two nights, then swing north for three. Nothing is doubled back except the unavoidable stretch of the Yerevan to Goris highway, and even that gets broken up with different stops in each direction. If you want the broader picture before you commit, our Armenia travel guide covers visas, money and seasons, and the best time to visit Armenia goes month by month.

Day 1: Arrival and your first evening in Yerevan

Most flights into Zvartnots land late at night or very early in the morning, which is a quirk of the region rather than an accident. The airport sits 12 km from the centre and a taxi runs roughly 3,000 to 5,000 dram in 2026, about 7 to 12 euros. Do not plan anything for day one beyond dinner.

If you land in the morning, walk to Republic Square, eat at a courtyard place off Saryan Street and go to bed early. Yerevan eats late: at ten in the evening the restaurants are full and the fountains are still running. Jet lag from central Europe is minimal, only two to three hours, so most people are fine by breakfast.

Sleep: Yerevan, centre, within walking distance of Republic Square or Saryan Street.

Day 2: Yerevan on foot

Give the capital a full day before you drive anywhere. Start at the Cascade early, before the stone heats up, climb the steps for the Ararat view, then work back down through the sculpture garden. The Vernissage flea market runs at weekends and is where you will find silver, carpets, old Soviet cameras and carved wood. The Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd deserves two hours and a quiet afternoon.

Our things to do in Yerevan piece has the full list, and if you would rather have a local walk you through the city on your first morning, the Yerevan city walking tour is a good way to get oriented.

Sleep: Yerevan, same hotel.

Khor Virap with Mount Ararat behind, the image most travellers come to Armenia for

Day 3: Garni, Geghard and the Azat gorge

Your first drive is a gentle one. Garni is 28 km east of Yerevan, about 40 minutes. The Hellenistic temple stands on a spur above the Azat gorge, and below it the Symphony of Stones, a wall of hexagonal basalt columns, is worth the short walk or the 4×4 shuttle. Geghard is another 10 km up the valley, 15 minutes, and is carved directly into the cliff. Go inside the rock-cut chambers and wait for someone to sing; the acoustics do the rest.

Come back through Garni village for lunch and watch lavash being slapped onto the wall of a tonir oven. Total driving for the day is under 90 km. Detail on both sites is in our Garni and Geghard guide, and the Garni and Geghard half-day tour covers it in an afternoon if you are not driving yet.

Sleep: Yerevan, same hotel.

Day 4: Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank

This is the day people remember. Khor Virap is 40 km south of Yerevan, about 45 minutes, and sits on a hill on the Ararat plain with the closed Turkish border a few hundred metres away and Mount Ararat filling the whole sky behind it. Morning light is best, and in the hour after dawn in September the haze has not yet risen. Read the Khor Virap and Ararat guide for the timing.

From there it is 75 km south to Areni, an hour and a quarter, through the Ararat plain and into Vayots Dzor. Areni is Armenia’s wine village, home to the cave where the world’s oldest known winery was excavated. Taste at two or three small producers, then drive the last 8 km up the red gorge to Noravank, which glows orange in late afternoon sun. See our Noravank and Areni article, and Armenian wine guide if you want to know what you are drinking.

You can do this as a day trip and sleep in Yerevan again, or push on to Goris. We prefer sleeping in Yerevan and driving south fresh the next morning.

Sleep: Yerevan, same hotel. Driving: about 230 km round trip.

Days 5 and 6: South to Goris and Tatev

Day 5 is the long one. Yerevan to Goris is 240 km and takes four to five hours because the highway climbs the Vorotan pass at 2,344 m and two others besides. Break it at Jermuk for the mineral water gallery and waterfall, or at Sisian. Arrive in Goris in the afternoon and walk up to the old cave dwellings of Old Khndzoresk with its swing bridge across the ravine.

Day 6 is Tatev. The cable car from Halidzor, the Wings of Tatev, is 5,752 metres long and holds the record for the longest non-stop double-track reversible aerial tramway in the world. It takes about twelve minutes and crosses the Vorotan gorge with nothing but air beneath you. The monastery on the far side dates to the ninth century and was once a university. Give it three hours, then either return to Goris or begin the drive north.

Full detail sits in our Tatev and Wings of Tatev guide and the wider southern Armenia road trip. If you would rather not drive this stretch yourself, the Tatev two-day tour does exactly these two days.

Sleep: Goris or Halidzor, two nights.

Day 7: North again, over the Selim Pass

Drive back towards Yerevan but take the old Selim road where the Vayk valley allows it. The Orbelian caravanserai at 2,410 m has stood on the Silk Road since 1332 and is usually empty apart from sheep. From Selim the road drops to the southern shore of Lake Sevan. Total for the day is around 250 km and six hours with stops, so start early.

Note that the Selim Pass closes in snow, usually between November and April. In winter you return on the main highway instead, which is longer but always open.

Sleep: Dilijan.

Day 8: Lake Sevan and Dilijan

Sevan is 1,900 m above sea level and one of the largest high-altitude lakes anywhere. The Sevanavank peninsula with its two ninth-century churches is the classic stop, 65 km from Yerevan, and Hayravank a little further south is quieter. Eat lake trout, ishkhan, at a shore restaurant.

Dilijan is 35 km from Sevan through a tunnel, about 40 minutes, and the change is total: pine forest, wooden balconies, mist. Armenians call it their Switzerland and the joke is older than any of us. Walk the Sharambeyan old street, then take the forest trail to Haghartsin monastery. See the Lake Sevan guide and Dilijan guide, or book the Sevan and Dilijan day trip.

Sleep: Dilijan, second night.

Dilijan from above, forested and green even in high summer

Day 9: Lori, then west to Gyumri

North from Dilijan the Debed canyon holds Haghpat and Sanahin, two UNESCO-listed monasteries about 80 km away, an hour and a half. They are the oldest-feeling places in Armenia, all moss and shadow. From Sanahin it is around 130 km west to Gyumri, roughly two and a half hours through Stepanavan and the Pambak valley.

Gyumri is Armenia’s second city, rebuilt in black tuff after the 1988 earthquake, with a genuinely different character from Yerevan: more Russian-imperial, more melancholy, better bread. Walk Kumayri, the old quarter. Our northern Armenia guide goes deeper.

Sleep: Gyumri.

Day 10: Echmiadzin, Zvartnots and back to Yerevan

Gyumri to Yerevan is 120 km on a good highway, about two hours. Break it at Echmiadzin, the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the oldest cathedral site in the country, and at the ruined seventh-century Zvartnots cathedral just before the airport. That timing works well for an evening or overnight departure. If your flight is early the next morning, take a last night in Yerevan instead and eat properly.

The shorter 7-day variant

If you only have a week, do not try to compress all ten days. Cut a region instead. Two versions work:

South-focused week: Yerevan (2 nights), Garni and Geghard as a day trip, Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank as a day trip, then Goris and Tatev (2 nights), returning to Yerevan for the final two nights. You skip Sevan, Dilijan and Gyumri entirely.

North-focused week: Yerevan (3 nights) with Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap and Noravank as day trips, then Dilijan (2 nights) for Sevan, Haghartsin and the Debed canyon, and Gyumri (1 night) before returning. You skip Tatev, which is the bigger sacrifice but the easier drive to lose.

Our classic Armenia 7-day tour follows the first of these, and day trips from Yerevan lists what else fits around it.

Practical notes before you book

Roads on this route are paved and in reasonable condition, but mountain sections are narrow, lorries are slow and livestock has right of way in practice if not in law. Drive in daylight. Fuel stations are frequent on the main highways and scarce on the Selim road, so fill up in Yeghegnadzor. Hotel standards outside Yerevan and Dilijan are simple guesthouses more often than hotels, and that is part of the pleasure: breakfast is usually homemade.

Budget honestly. In 2026 a mid-range traveller should plan on roughly 90 to 140 euros per person per day including a shared car, guesthouse or three-star hotel, entrance fees and meals. Our Armenia travel costs article breaks that down, and getting around Armenia compares car hire with drivers and minibuses.

We run this exact route as a private trip for independent travellers, with a local driver-guide who knows which guesthouse has the good apricot jam.
