Where Yerevan is pink tuff, wide boulevards and new glass, Gyumri is dark grey and black volcanic stone, low buildings, carved doorframes and courtyards. It was a garrison town of the Russian Empire under the name Alexandropol, then Leninakan in the Soviet period, and it kept the confident merchant architecture of the 1880s and 1890s better than anywhere else in the country.

The protected old town is the Kumayri historic district, several hundred listed buildings in a walkable grid around Vardanants Square. Walk it slowly. The pleasure is in details: iron balconies, the pale stone banding against the black basalt, workshops where somebody is still beating copper, and doors that have not been repainted since the last empire.

What to see

Vardanants Square with the twin churches of Surb Amenaprkich, which lost its dome in 1988 and has been rebuilt, and the Holy Mother of God church.

The Dzitoghtsyan Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life, a merchant house that explains how these families lived.

The Sergey Merkurov house museum, dedicated to the sculptor who made death masks of Tolstoy and Lenin.

The Mother Armenia statue and the Black Fortress, a round Russian era fort on the hill, now used as a concert venue.

The market and the bakeries. Gyumri’s version of things is always slightly different: the bread, the pastries, the humour.

A stone church in the highlands of northern Armenia

The 1988 earthquake, and why it still matters

On 7 December 1988 an earthquake with its epicentre near Spitak destroyed much of northwestern Armenia. Tens of thousands of people died, the town of Spitak was flattened, and Leninakan, as Gyumri then was, lost a large part of its housing and most of its Soviet era apartment blocks, which failed catastrophically while many nineteenth century stone buildings survived.

The Soviet Union collapsed three years later and reconstruction stalled for a generation. People lived in metal shipping containers, the domik, for far longer than anyone intended, in some cases into the 2010s. That history is the single most important thing to understand about Gyumri, and it explains both the gaps in the streetscape and the particular dry, resilient humour the city is famous for across Armenia.

You will see memorials, and you will see restored buildings next to unrestored ones. It is not a taboo subject. If you ask a host politely, you will usually hear a personal account, and it will be the thing you remember from your visit.

Getting to Gyumri

Marshrutkas leave Yerevan’s Kilikia bus station through the day and take about two hours on the M1. Shared taxis cost a little more and go when full. The train is the nicer option in good weather: slower at roughly three hours, but comfortable, and the Shirak plateau with Mount Aragats on one side is worth the extra hour. Gyumri also has its own international airport with low cost flights to several European cities, which makes it a sensible arrival or departure point. Practicalities are in our getting around Armenia guide.

Lori and the Debed canyon

East of Gyumri, over the Pambak mountains, the land drops into the Debed canyon: a deep, green, humid gorge running north to the Georgian border. This is Lori, and it feels different from the rest of Armenia. There are forests, mist, rusting Soviet industry, cable cars strung across the valley to villages on the rim, and a density of medieval architecture that is hard to believe.

The canyon road, the M6, follows the river the whole way. Every few kilometres a side road climbs steeply to a village on the plateau above, and almost every one of those villages has a church worth stopping for.

Haghpat and Sanahin

These two monasteries share one UNESCO World Heritage inscription: Haghpat was listed in 1996, and in 2000 the listing was extended to include Sanahin. They were founded in the tenth century under the Bagratid kings and grew into major centres of learning, with scriptoria, libraries and schools of illumination.

Sanahin

Sanahin sits above Alaverdi and is the more academic of the two: a tight cluster of churches, a domed gavit, a library with deep niches for manuscripts, and an arcaded academy building where theology and medicine were taught. The name is usually translated as older than that one, said to be a dig at Haghpat across the valley. The approach passes the eleventh century Sanahin bridge over the Debed, a beautifully built single arch that still carries traffic.

Haghpat

Haghpat, about ten kilometres away by road, is the more theatrical: a larger complex on an open shoulder of the hillside with long views down the canyon, a free standing bell tower, and a refectory. Look for the khachkar known as Amenaprkich, the All Saviour, carved in 1273, and for the carved relief of the two royal brothers holding a model of the church.

Both are living churches, so cover shoulders and keep your voice down if a service is on. Entry is free or a token amount, and a local guide at the gate is usually worth the few euros. If monasteries are the reason you came to Armenia, our guide to the best monasteries in Armenia puts these two in context.

Carved khachkars, the Armenian cross stones, of the kind found at Haghpat

Alaverdi, Odzun and Akhtala

Alaverdi is the canyon’s main town, a copper smelting centre built on two levels, with a Soviet cable car connecting the river valley to the plateau. It is not conventionally pretty and that is part of the appeal: this is working Armenia, and the contrast with the monasteries directly above it is the whole story of Lori in one view.

Odzun, on the western rim, has a basilica from around the sixth century, one of the oldest substantially intact churches in the country, standing in a field with a view straight down the gorge. The stone is pinkish, the proportions are heavy and early, and there is a strange funerary monument beside it with two carved stelae under arches. Many people find Odzun more moving than the famous two.

Akhtala, further north, is a fortified monastery whose church holds the best surviving medieval frescoes in Armenia, painted in the thirteenth century under Georgian Orthodox influence, with large figures in blue and ochre. It is often locked; ask in the village and someone will find the key.

Dsegh and the Tumanyan country

Dsegh, high on the eastern rim, is the birthplace of Hovhannes Tumanyan, the poet Armenians quote the way the Germans quote Goethe. His house is a museum, the village is green and quiet, and the walks along the canyon edge from here are the best in Lori. If you want one village stay in the north, make it this one.

Walkers should also know that the Transcaucasian Trail runs through this region on its way north, and there are good marked day walks between Dsegh, Kobayr and the canyon floor. See our guide to hiking in Armenia for the wider picture.

Where to sleep and eat

Gyumri has the best choice: a handful of boutique hotels in restored tuff houses, plus guesthouses, in the range of roughly 35 to 80 euros a night in 2026. In the Debed canyon you are mostly in family guesthouses at 25 to 45 euros with breakfast, and dinner at the house for around 10 euros a head.

Eat the local things. In Gyumri that means kyufta, a pounded meat dish the city claims as its own, and the pastry shops around the centre. In Lori it means whatever is growing: walnuts, mulberries, wild greens in spring, and the honey people sell at the roadside.

We build northern legs into most of our longer trips, usually Gyumri for two nights and the Debed canyon for one, with a driver who knows which village has the key to Akhtala. Have a look at our tours or ask us to add the north to an existing itinerary.

A four day northern route

Day 1. Yerevan to Gyumri by train, afternoon walking the Kumayri old town.

Day 2. Gyumri museums and market in the morning, drive over the Pambak range to Alaverdi.

Day 3. Sanahin and Haghpat, Sanahin bridge, evening in Dsegh.

Day 4. Odzun and Akhtala, then either south to Yerevan or north to the Georgian border.

The north pairs naturally with Dilijan, which is only an hour and a half from Alaverdi over the pass; see our Dilijan guide. It also makes the obvious last leg of a combined trip, which we compare in Armenia or Georgia. A full country loop including this region is set out in our ten day Armenia itinerary, and the guided version is our classic seven day tour.

Practical notes

Gyumri sits at 1,550 m on an open plateau and is genuinely cold from November to March, with heavy snow. Pack accordingly.

The Debed canyon is humid and warm in summer, several degrees milder than Yerevan.

Side roads up to the rim villages are steep and often rough. A normal car manages in dry weather, slowly.

Churches in small villages are frequently locked. Asking at the nearest house works almost every time.

Cash is useful outside Gyumri and Alaverdi, since card acceptance in villages is patchy.

A guide to northern Armenia: Gyumri’s black tuff old town and earthquake history, the UNESCO monasteries of Haghpat and
