If you hold an EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian or Japanese passport you need no visa at all and can stay up to 180 days in a year. This guide covers the rest: passport validity, insurance, customs, cash rules and which borders are open.

Entry at a glance

Item

What applies

Visa for EU, UK, US, CA, AU, NZ, JP

Not required

Maximum stay visa free

Usually up to 180 days in a 12 month period

Passport validity

Valid for the duration of stay; 6 months recommended

Blank pages

At least one for the entry stamp

Onward ticket

Rarely requested, occasionally by airlines

Travel insurance

Not compulsory at the border, strongly advised

Cash declaration threshold

Around the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars

Police registration

Not required for tourists

Open land borders

Georgia and Iran

Rules do change. Treat this as an informed starting point and confirm with the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or your own foreign ministry close to departure.

Who travels visa free

Armenia runs one of the more open visa policies in the region. Citizens of every European Union member state, plus the EEA countries, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, most of Latin America and a long list of others enter without a visa. Armenia has also periodically extended temporary visa exemptions to residents of additional countries, so if your nationality normally needs a visa but you hold residency in the EU, the UK, the US or the Gulf, it is worth checking the current exemption list before applying for anything.

The standard visa free allowance is up to 180 days within a twelve month period. This is genuinely generous, and it is cumulative rather than per entry, so three sixty day trips in one year use the full allowance.

If you do need a visa

Two routes exist. The electronic visa is applied for online before travel, is usually issued within a few working days, and comes in a short stay version of around 21 days and a longer version of around 120 days. Visa on arrival is also available at Zvartnots International Airport for many nationalities, paid in dram at the counter before passport control. Fees are modest, broadly in the range of a few euros for the short visa and around thirty five euros for the longer one in 2026, but check the official rate before you rely on a figure.

Whichever route you use, print or screenshot the confirmation. Mobile data at the border is not guaranteed.

Khor Virap with Mount Ararat behind, close to a border that has been closed for decades

Passport, stamps and small print

Armenia asks that your passport be valid for the period of your stay. That is looser than the six month rule many countries apply, but airlines frequently enforce their own standard, and a check in agent refusing boarding is a far more likely problem than an Armenian border officer. Travel with six months of validity and the question never comes up.

You will get a stamp on entry and exit. Keep at least one clear page. Children need their own passports. If you are travelling with a child who is not yours, or as one parent of two, carry a letter of consent and the birth certificate; it is rarely requested but occasionally is.

There is no arrival card to fill in at the airport, and no requirement for tourists to register with the police or any local authority during their stay.

Travel insurance

Insurance is not checked at the Armenian border for visa free visitors. Take it anyway. Armenia is not in the European Union, so the European Health Insurance Card is worthless here and all treatment is billed privately. Private clinics in Yerevan are good and by European standards inexpensive, but an evacuation from a hiking accident in Syunik is not.

If your trip includes hiking above about 2,500 metres, skiing at Tsaghkadzor, the Wings of Tatev cableway or any off road driving, read your policy’s exclusions rather than assuming. Many standard European policies treat mountain rescue as an add on.

Customs, cash and what you can bring

Cash. Amounts above roughly the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars must be declared in writing on arrival and departure. Under that, nothing to do.

Alcohol and tobacco. Personal allowances are broadly in line with European norms, in the order of two litres of spirits and 200 cigarettes. Do not try to bring a case of wine in as personal use.

Medication. Bring prescriptions in their original packaging with a doctor’s note for anything controlled, including strong painkillers and some ADHD medication.

Antiques and carpets. This is the one that catches people. Exporting items over about fifty years old, including old carpets, icons, coins and manuscripts, requires a permit from the Ministry of Culture. Reputable dealers arrange it; market stalls do not. Ask before you buy.

Drones. Permitted in general but restricted near military sites, government buildings, the airport and border zones, which in Armenia covers more ground than you might expect. Register and ask locally.

Pets. An EU pet passport, microchip and current rabies vaccination are the baseline. Confirm current requirements with an Armenian consulate well before you fly.

Republic Square in central Yerevan, twenty minutes from the airport

Arriving by air

Almost everyone arrives at Zvartnots International Airport, twelve kilometres west of Yerevan. Passport control is usually quick. There are ATMs and exchange counters in the arrivals hall, though rates in the city are better, and a SIM card desk if you want local data straight away. Taxis are available on the app you already use for ride hailing at home in most cases, and booking through an app avoids the inflated kerbside fares. Gyumri’s Shirak airport handles a smaller number of budget flights and works the same way. Our guide to flights to Armenia covers routes and timings.

Land borders in 2026

Georgia: open

Three crossings operate. Bagratashen and Sadakhlo is the main one on the Yerevan to Tbilisi road, used by overnight buses, minibuses and shared taxis, and typically takes thirty to ninety minutes. Bavra and Ninotsminda serves the Gyumri route. Gogavan and Guguti is the quieter third option. Visa free rules apply exactly as at the airport. If you are combining the two countries, our comparison of Armenia or Georgia may help you split your days.

Iran: open

The Agarak and Norduz crossing in the far south is open and used by freight and by travellers with an Iranian visa arranged in advance. It is a long way from anywhere.

Turkey and Azerbaijan: closed

Both borders have been closed for decades. There has been diplomatic movement towards normalisation with Turkey and occasional reports of partial openings for specific categories of traveller, but as of 2026 you cannot plan a standard tourist route across either. Check the current position before building an itinerary that depends on it. The practical consequence is that Armenia is entered by air, from Georgia or from Iran.

A visa or entry stamp from Armenia does not stop you entering Turkey. It can complicate entry to Azerbaijan, so if you plan to visit Azerbaijan on the same trip, research that country’s rules carefully.

Overstaying and extending

If you stay beyond your visa free allowance you will be fined on departure, and the fine scales with the length of the overstay. If you want to stay longer than 180 days, the route is a temporary residence permit applied for inside the country, which is a separate process and takes weeks rather than days. For an ordinary holiday none of this applies.

Things worth knowing before the border

Border officers speak Armenian and Russian, often some English, and are generally undramatic. Have an address for your first night ready even though it is rarely asked for. Do not photograph border installations. If you are driving a rental car from Georgia into Armenia, you need the rental company’s written permission and local third party insurance bought at the border, so confirm this with the rental firm before you book.

Once you are through, the rest is simple.
