Its 9th-century churches, fortified walls and old olive press feel remote even today, and the view down into the canyon is unforgettable.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to arrive is by the <strong>Wings of Tatev<\/strong> cable car. At 5,752 metres, it holds the Guinness World Record as the longest non-stop double-track reversible aerial tramway. Walk behind it to see the Symphony of Stones, a gorge lined with perfectly hexagonal basalt columns.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes further up the valley, <strong>Geghard Monastery<\/strong> is partly carved straight into the mountain. Armenians call it the &#8220;sea&#8221; they never had. In summer, its beaches fill with swimmers, while spring and autumn bring clear air and quiet shores.<\/p>\n<p>On the peninsula stands <strong>Sevanavank<\/strong>, a pair of dark stone churches founded in 874. According to tradition, Saint Gregory the Illuminator was held here in a deep pit for 13 years before curing King Trdat III, who then made Armenia the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD.<\/p>\n<p>You can still climb down the ladder into the pit.
